The event is the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 which is also called the Gulf Oil spill of 2010. The Deepwater Horizon spill happened on April 20th, 2010 but didn’t start affecting things until April 22nd, 2010 because the oil rig had caught fire and sunk into the atlantic ocean and polluted surrounding areas. Supporters of the oil spill that were affected by the oil spill were all lined up in boats on June 2nd, 2010 were protesting. Also since people were protesting somebody wrote on the side of their boat in bright orange letters “44 days still pumping BP lied” and later got arrested for refusing to move their boat after authorities had asked. Also something else happened in June of 2010 the president at the time former president Barrack …show more content…
Nearly three months after the oil rig leaked about and estimated amount of 134 million gallons ( 507 liters ) poured into the waters and contaminated them. “At midday, it 's normally light enough you can read a book 60 feet below” says porter who catches fish for a restaurant “But the oil blocked out so much sunlight, I could barely read my gauges” also says porter. “At midday, it 's normally light enough you can read a book 60 feet below” says porter who catches fish for a restaurant “But the oil blocked out so much sunlight, I could barely read my gauges” also says porter. Scientists said that when the spill happened that “And there is no data that suggests there are any long-term population-level impacts to any species” so some species could become endangered but couldn 't become extinct. BP also captured an additional 34 million gallons ( 130 million liters ) that had spewed from the well before the oil could pollute gulf
Like what is said above there is a risk for oil to get into the water and there is a lot of concern in the parts of the aquifers that are just below the Sand Hills and certain areas of the aquifer the water is near on at the surface Subpoint: Wildlife— There are two primary types of impacts that occur with a spill of crude oil Physical impacts— soil, sediments, plants, and animals can become coated with oil. When animals are covered in oil they can have difficulty feeding or obtaining oxygen toxicological impacts— crude oil may be toxic when ingested… “ingestion occurs typically when an oiled animal attempts to clean its fur or feathers
The greatest concerns would be a spill or leak near environmentally sensitive places such as wetlands, streams and rivers, shallow groundwater areas, areas near water intakes for drinking water or for commercial/industrial uses, and areas with populations of sensitive wildlife or plant species” (Palliser 2012, 9). If there would be a leak or the crude oil would spill into water, humans could be gravely impacted. There has been research done in the Fort Chipewyan community, in which researchers found that among these people the rates of cancer were higher. This community is near tar-sands operations, downstream of the Athabasca River in Canada. Moreover, the tar-sands pollutants can increase chances of asthma, heart and lung disease
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill, also referred to as the BP oil spill, occurred on April 20th, 2010, in the Gulf of Mexico, near the Mississippi River Delta. The oil spill was marked as one of the worst corporate inflicted ecological disaster in our nation’s history. Not only has the spill been polluting the Gulf with barrels of oil, it has been polluting politics with millions of political cartoons in regards to the spill. Illustrating the different reactions of the BP oil spill, Drew Sheneman created a political cartoon between a female figure and a Republican looking down at the after effects of the BP oil spill on the Gulf Coast. Sheneman’s political cartoon uses imagery, symbolism, and irony, to differentiate the woman and Republican’s different responses to the tragic oil spill.
Offshore Drilling Every year, in the United States alone, 565 million barrels or oil are extracted as a result of offshore drilling; totaling a startling amount of roughly 1.5 million barrels a day. Consequently, these threatening practices are negatively impacting marine mammals, sea birds, sea turtles, and fish. Although drilling offshore provides access to expensive resources such as oil, it heavily contributes to the extinction and endangerment of animals, and the disruption of marine ecosystems, thus these practices should be prohibited and viewed as unethical. To begin, new techniques of horizontal drilling allow for even greater amounts of oil to be extracted from a single well, producing problems in infrastructure on land.
Preparation to the Crisis: From all these previous accidents and experts opinion we can see it is very obvious that BP was not prepared to deal with such an accident. To prove this statement, Former BP CEO Tony Hayward admitted in his interview to Money Programme on BBC 2 that ―”BP’s contingency plans were inadequate‖, that BP ―was not prepared‖ for the Gulf oil disaster and was ―making it up day to day‖ in the early stages”. Tony Hayward also admitted that ―”BP was not prepared to deal with the intense media scrutiny over the Gulf oil disaster”‖ and that he felt he was ―”demonized and vilified”‖. After one month of this oil spill incident, the Wall Street Journal reported that Hayward ―”admitted that the oil giant had not the technology available to stop the leak”. He also mentioned, “it was probably true that BP should have done more to prepare for such an emergency”. In addition, the investigations conducted by Congressional committee on energy and commerce concluded that BP was not prepared for a catastrophic loss of well
Approximately 206 million gallons of oil were reported to have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, in 2012, the General Land Office stated that there were 543 oil spills on the Texas coast. On average, that is more than
On March 24, 1989, one of the most detrimental oil spills in Alaskan history occurred. The spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, which was a common area of the coast of Alaska for importing and exporting goods such as oil. A ship named the Exxon Valdez was exporting an estimated 1.2 million barrels to Long Beach, California when it suddenly crashed into the Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef. This caused the ship to come apart and have the oil being carried inside of it to leak into the ocean. An estimated 11 million gallons spilled; luckily, much of the oil evaporated after the spill; however, a large amount of oil still remained in the ocean.
This caused a pressurized flow of oil through the Gulf of Mexico floor causing clean water with many plants an animals in it to become threatened by the chemicals. (Source 5)The chemicals and sand being left under the surface
1. Introduction In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform spit nearly five million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest oil spill in history. The 1989 oil spill surpassed Exxon Valdez's oil spill in 1989 as the largest oil spill ever seen in US-controlled waters and the Ixtoc I oil spill of 1979 as the largest oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon, an ultra-deepwater offshore rig, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico about 41 miles off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 riggers and injuring 17 others.
The toxic chemicals released from extraction were poisoning clean water sources. This lead to increasing cases of cancer, hyperthyroidism, lupus, and renal failure in people located in areas near the present pipeline. These effects clearly show the vast hazard this oil presents for the environment and society. In conclusion, as stated and proven throughout this essay, the Keystone pipeline creates many environmental issues.
Unfortunately, they often result in environmental damage and are often overlooked in favor of negative news. The positive trend is a gradual improvement in oil spill prevention and response measures. While oil spills still occur, the frequency and severity of such incidents have decreased, thanks to improved safety regulations and technology. Unfortunately, these developments are not as attention-grabbing as negative news and often overlooked by the media and public.
On April 22 the Deepwater Horizon’s rig capsized and sank (Pallardy, 2017). In 87 days there was a total of 3.19 million barrels of oil released into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico (Portal Team, 2016). During the spill a 22 mile long oil plume formed due to the chemical dispersants released allowed the oil and seawater to mix and stay just below the surface. Some oil floated on top of the water created an oil slick. About 20 percent of the spilled ended up on the top of and in the sea floor.
Drilling into Disaster: BP in the Gulf of Mexico Gulf of Mexico is one of the valuable place in which it has variety of marine life, such as fish, shrimp and other species The issues of incident on spill oil should be on concerned as it leads to this disaster for human being and environment. The case is discussed how BP company responses. It means how its board and management accountability, corporate responsibility, risk management, code of conduct and whistleblowing, compensation practices, and stakeholder communications react on this disaster. With regard to the disaster, BP CEO should have behaved appropriately because he should have responsibility on his job and should give his employees a better solution better than not saying anything. The problem was still there even BP change CEO to Dudley.
Pollution is the introduction or release of substances or energy that decrease the quality of the marine environment. Many pollutants are toxic of harmful to marine life (Castro and Huber, 2010). South Africa is known around the world for being one of the most diverse marine environment in the world, with 83% of the known fish families residing in South Africa (Van der Elst, 2007). There are also many marine species that are endemic to South Africa, which means they are only found in South Africa. Almost 30% of the South African population lives on the coastline (Taljaard et al. 2006), which has led to the urbanization of the coastlines and which then led to the industrialization of these areas.
The ocean is nowadays undergoing numerous environmental issues that further lead to marine pollution. Marine pollution is a very serious environmental issue that most of the countries of the world encounter. Aquatic littering is considered as one of the major causes of marine environment. The misleading use of the marine environment is extremely impacting the marine life and ecosystems. Moreover, the total amount of toxins and debris discharged by human beings is incredibly increasing in today 's world.
