Dentists need dental assistants to help them with their daily duties. As with most jobs in the medical field, a dental assistant career in is demand. When good jobs are scarce, there will still be a demand for dental assistants. Most people want their teeth cleaned at least once a year, and dentists need assistance. When you work in a dental office, you may have several responsibilities. You may work with a general dentist or an orthodontist. Sometimes, dental assistants are in charge of billing and records. Their daily duties can depend on the work setting. If the dentist already has a secretary, the dental assistant may not have to perform secretarial duties.
The career field that I have chosen to go into is the medical field. In the medical field I would like to become a dental hygienist. The background that I have on dental hygienist is that you exam gums, clean teeth, and teach about oral care. The research that I have already done on this profession is a dental hygienist annual salary and required hour of work. Some more research I utilized is how many years of college are needed, what you do while at work, and if you work by yourself or who you work with.
I was born in a small town called Berwick in the state of Louisiana. I do not remember much of my childhood anymore, but I know I was a very outgoing, active, and adventurous child. I love to be outdoors running around with my friends more than I like to be indoors watching TV. Now, I feel that I am completely opposite. If there was a sport I could play outside I begged my mother to let me sign up. Being a part of a group of girls that loved the sport as much as I did made it fun. I also enjoyed reading, and still do. I could pick up a book and not put it down for hours. I would get so into the story that going a night without finishing it would drive me insane. I guess reading was one thing that helped me calm down. I could get lost in a book for hours trying to play the story out like a movie in my head. I honestly thought when I grew up I would have a career in something to do with TV, but as I got older I realized it that was not for me.
They always supply new packaging in order to avoid the spread of any germs. The only equipment that is sterilized are the critical instruments that are used to penetrate teeth or have contact with the bloodstream of a patient. I will work within a small group in a dental department and talk to my patients one to one. My personality fits my position due to my good social skills and would be able to explain things in a more creative way to kids who might not understand. Science, math, and verbal skills are an important role in the occupation due to the equipment used and communication with patients. Work will always take place inside to avoid many things, noise can be a disturbance when having important conversations. I would often examine my patient from a close range so it involves a lot of physical interactions. “Everything is clean and organized to avoid any physical hazards” (Links 8). Schedules differ depending on office hours from the company, most new workers still do full time which is 40 hours a week. An orthodontist may open or close their business early to adjust his schedule, but rarely fly around for work. Depending on who you work for, your schedule will differ, but if you own your own business, then it is your choice on how to use your
Working in any type of dental office is not for everyone, however I came to the conclusion that this is what I wanted to do. In seventh grade I knew I wanted to go to York Tech to do nursing but always had dental in the back of my mind. Although during my third year in high school I realized that nursing is not what I wanted to do anymore. Then, I realized that I always wanted to do dental as well. I definitely thought about how job shadowing might be best first before I start college to make sure this was the right job for me.
I previously applied to Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in 2014. Instead of rushing myself to apply the next cycle, I waited another year, reevaluating myself and strengthening my application to become a more competitive candidate. Although I already had more than 400 hours of shadowing experience, working at the dental offices for a year showed me a more realistic view of dentistry – the physical demands that dentists face everyday, the difficulties of managing a budget and administrative work, and the responsibilities of supervising a large number of staff.
Many people confuse a dental hygienist with a dentist or a dental assistant. Dental hygienists are the people that handle most of the cleaning and surgery processes. I chose this career to research because my mom worked in the dental field and she enjoyed it. Another reason why I am so interested in this subject is because I have struggled with teeth and oral issues before, so I would like to help kids and adults with the same issues as me. I would love to be a dental hygienist because the pay is high, you can make new friends, and you have manageable hours.
Since a young age, the field of dentistry has fascinated me. Going to regular oral cleanings and examinations did not mean sitting in a chair for two hours and staring at someone scrape the plaque off my teeth with sharp, pointy objects or "instruments". Instead, it was an opportunity to ask burning questions about the profession that I loved.
I am 28 years old, married to my husband Matt, and I have wanted to become a dental hygienist for a few years now. At the age of 18, I started working as an instrument sterilizer at an orthodontist office in 2006. After a few months my employer gave me the opportunity of furthering my career by sending me to the Maryland State Dental Association in Maryland. I took a few classes and gained my radiology and my expanded functions certification. I was trained to take panoramic and cephalometric x-rays. Soon after I was trained to work chairside. I moved to Virginia in 2010 and started working at KlarVoorhees Orthodontics. During my first year at KlarVoorhees Orthodontics my employers encouraged me to go back to school because they knew it was a dream of mine.
