Could you imagine being surrounded by so many people and still feeling lonely and helpless? “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” (Emerson 2017). This is a message many people should live by. In Of Mice of Men the message that I believe John Steinbeck is trying to show us is to treat people the way we want to be treated. Nobody should be treated different because of their age.
In literature, mostly all of the central characters undergo a meaningful change because of a choice he or she made.“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”( Roy T.Bennett). In a Separate Peace , it tells the story of Gene’s change from being innocent and making atrocious decisions, to adulthood. At the beginning of the novel, Gene is guiltless and unconcerned, he is an exemplary student with few preoccupations such as studying and being friends with Finny. However, as the novel advances, Gene cultivates another side of his personality. One with dark motives and a great deal of jealousy. One choice, a
The essay Be Specific by Natalie Goldberg was an essay thats main point to me was respect. Respect is something that every individual deserves. A synopsis of what respect means to me all leads back to the golden rule, treat others as you want to be treated. The example that Natalie used that was the most realistic to me was when she said "Hey, girl, get in line.". Many people in today 's world do not take the time to use names it is always hey you, dude, bro, girl, and so the list goes on; as a result our generation is known for being disrespectful in regards to previous years. Although, in today 's society disrespect is more common that is not the case for everyone. Respect is something that people have or they do not; it is mainly taught
All throughout my life I’ve been taught by my mentors that leadership is grown, cultivated, and earned. What organization embodies that the most other than the Marine Corps. In life you are always going to have leaders whether or not you are one or striving to be one. Leadership should be respected even if you dislike the one charge. All leaders no matter how great or revered make mistakes. As someone who strives to be a leader I strive to learn from not only my mistakes but also the mistakes of my leaders. I recently made a mistake I disrespected a leader in front of other leaders. Thus proving that no matter how much I thought of myself as a leader I am not yet a leader. The Marine Corps values rank structure
How many of you have a best friend? How many of you have been told you can’t hang out with them, ever again? I’m sure most if not all of you said no to the second question. But in the book Lions of Little Rock you meet two best friends who loved to hang out with each other. But sadly they get torn apart because of the color of a girl 's skin.
Good morning students and teachers. I honestly can't believe I've made it through my last year of schooling here at Southern Cross. Throughout my senior English studies, I have realised that individuality is something that is unfortunately lost amongst the trends and expectations of a developing society. Especially in regards to adolescents, I believe that it can be incredibly difficult to maintain a sense of independence and uniqueness in a society where everyone is expected to conform to the majority. Over the last two years, texts such as “The Kite Runner”, Shakespeare's “Othello”, Robert Frost's “Into My Own”, and the film “The Breakfast Club” have definitely inspired me to be myself and to stay true my own beliefs.
“What’s the worst possible thing you can call a woman? Don’t hold back, now. You’re probably thinking of words like slut, whore, b***h, c**t (I told you not to hold back!), sk*nk. Okay, now, what are the worst things you can call a guy? F*g, girl, b***h, p***y... The worst thing you can call a girl is a girl. The worst thing you can call a guy is a girl. Being a woman is the ultimate insult” (Valenti). Scout Finch knows this better than anyone, despite her age. She is repeatedly looked down upon by her family and friends for not acting parallel to gender norms. Her relationship with her father, Atticus, and housekeeper, Calpurnia, also bring forth issues surrounding the way she was
Respect is a big part of our lives still. Although the presence of many of the virtuous Native American values is very meager today, this one still exists as a miniscule glimmer across our lives. One must have respect for others to first have respect for themselves. You make a choice of how people will see you: as a incorrigible person, or as a respectful person. People will usually treat you accordingly.
“The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it.”
“There are things you can 't back down on, things you gotta take a stand on. But it 's up to you to decide what them things are. You have to demand respect in this world, ain 't nobody just gonna hand it to you. How you carry yourself, what you stand for--that 's how you gain respect. But, little one, ain 't nobody 's respect worth more than your own,” (Taylor, 134). Cassie Logan starts off naive, unworldly, and oblivious to it all, but soon after she goes to school and gets racist books, then says she doesn 't want them when she shows her teacher the crude writing on the inside cover only to get a beating in front of the class, which sure isn 't right. Cassie then gets her arm wrenched by a grown white man, has deceived little Lilly Jean, and sees TJ plunge down a dark abyss into the wrong path. In Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor there are both static and dynamic characters, one of which is named Cassie who out develops the rest by learning the importance of family, bravery and self respect, and love when
The Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s helped change the way colored people were treated in America and positively shaped America in the way civil rights and race issues were dealt with. In The Help, Kathryn Stockett focuses on civil rights as the main social and political issue by using different literary elements such as parallelism and different points of view to show contradicting sides of one story as well as properly explain from different narratives. Moreover, she also uses various events and conflicts among characters to show segregation, which was a pivotal cause of the movement and acts that took place.
In Toni Morrison’s novel, Sula, Morrison utilizes the racist incidents within the Bottom to illustrate the submissive, degrading, and foolish influence of racist America on African Americans, while still successfully capturing the dignity and sense of community of the African Americans, ultimately demonstrating the stupidity of racism. Morrison first depicts African Americans as wanting to conform and assimilate into the white American culture through Helene’s Wright behavior towards her daughter, Nel Wright. By disliking Nel’s physical appearance, Helene represents the discrimination many African Americans have against their heritage and roots; therefore, she submits to the racism. The stupidity also becomes apparent because of Morrison’s
The Help is set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s. Skeeter, a southern society girl, interviews the black women who have spent their lives being servants for wealthy white Southern families. There are various scenes throughout the film that show social stratification, racial inequalities, gender inequalities, and class inequalities.
The Help is an example of American drama film. It was released in August 9, 2011 and its length was 146 minutes and directed by Tate Taylor. The film was adapted to a novel, where there has been a long tradition of African- American women serving as “The Help” for upper-middle class white woman and their families. Descriptions of historical events of the early activities of thecivil rights movement are peppered throughout the novel, as are interactions between the maids and their white employers. The movie clearly exposes the many ways that the human dignity of African- American maids was ignored. They had suffered daily embarrassment but were able to claim their own way dignity.
That’s right, Psychology 101, in general, people will only give you respect, if you first respect them. Another basic rule that so much people tend to forget in their everyday life.
