Drinking Water
Water is the basis of all life - an ecological resource for the flora and fauna of our earth and a fundamental necessity for human life. WHO and different regulatory agencies consider that “drinking-water” should be “suitable for human consumption and for all usual domestic purposes including personal hygiene” Drinking-water should therefore be suitable for consumption, washing/showering and domestic food preparation. In human health terms, exposure to water and its constituents can occur through ingestion, contact and aerosol inhalation. The WHO estimates that 80% of all disease is in some way connected with contaminated water {27}. Water has become an important factor in the quality of life and development in most countries.

The common sources of contamination of bottled water are the source of bottled water, equipment, bottles and caps, exposure to air, contact with human during the bottling process {25}. Although the microbial number in processed water is often initially low, it can increases rapidly due to long storage {20}. This rapid growth of bacteria after the water is bottled may be due to oxygenation of the water during processing, the increase in surface area provide by the bottle, the increase in the temperature and the amount of nutrients arising from the bottle {22,25}. {34} reported that some bacteria can multiply on polyvinyl chloride of ultra-marine blue dye in the bottle plastic material. When water is heavily contaminated, it gives off a bad odor and may cause gastrointestinal upset. It is known that PVC bottles used, in association with certain bacteria such as Acinetobacter spp and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, frequently have an off-odor, due to the phenomena of elevated lipolytic activity due to their cell hydrophobicity and adhesivity to the PVC. The Flint water crisis has been a well known life-threatening issue for nearly three years, and yet has still not been solved. The problem began in April, 2014, when the city of Flint, Michigan switched their water supply to the Flint River in order to save money. Almost immediately after the switch of water source, residents complained about the quality of water, while city and state officials denied the possibility of an issue for months. As time went by, the supply pipes had corroded and lead began making its way into the water supply, potentially endangering the Flint population, as high blood lead levels are especially harmful to children and pregnant women, and can cause “learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and mental retardation,”
The purpose of this lab report is to employ a myriad of skills, tools and, methods learned throughout this semester to perform the appropriate tests for the identification of the assigned unknown bacteria. Add more background information here!!! The most important tools and techniques used during this identification include aseptic technique, microscopic examination and, the use of selective and differential media. Aseptic technique is an important tool for microbiologists. It is imperative that aseptic technique is maintained throughout the length of any test to avoid any cross-contamination that may lead to inaccurate results.
I expect to learn the biochemical differences in bacteria from this lab. Also, how to identify different species of bacteria. Material & Methods For the first day of the practical, an unknown specimen was provided
Many unknown micro-contaminants are present in water. Some of the micro-contaminations might pose a risk to drinking water and human health. In many countries, surface water is one of the main sources of drinking water. The quality of the drinking water is influenced by many factors, such as agricultural and industrial waste, and is monitored regularly. Stated by the Journal of Chromatography, there are many techniques such as gas and liquid chromatography in order to detect the pollutants.
Governor Rick Snyder caused one of the biggest disasters in Michigan. The flint water crisis. Governor Snyder switched the Flint water system which was connected to the Detroit water system to the Flint River. And right away people started noticing severe changes to their water. This was caused from the water pipes corroding and lead leaking into the water.
In the laboratory, identification of an unknown bacterium is often necessary. In the lab, a random sample consisting of three different bacteria was selected. The sample contained one gram-positive, one gram-negative paracolon, and one gram-negative coliform. The purpose of the experiment is to identify each of the three species that the mixture contained. After receiving an unknown mixture, the sample was streaked for isolation onto TSA, blood agar, and MacConkey plates.
The aim of the experiment was to test what effects that ethanol solution has on the membrane permeability of B. Vulgaris. The B. Vulgaris samples were approximately 1cm3. They were kept the same size to ensure accurate results. A control test was conducted in distilled water to obtain a result to compare. The ethanol treatments were 40% and 70%.
These facts introduce and support the message that Standage is delivering. Standage continues with many statistics: “Admittedly, both kinds of water suffer from occasional contamination problems but tap water is more stringently monitored and tightly regulated than bottled water. New york city tap water, for example, was tested 430,600 times during 2004 alone.” He stated. Even though he admits that both of each kind contains chemicals-which at the same time Standage claims that the tap water is more sanitized-but also he points out that it is not the taste that differs between the two

This means that 25 to 40 percent of the bottled water is not any different from the tap water only that it has been exposed to or has a high concentration of the chemicals used to manufacture the packaging plastics. Due to the pathetically primitive regulation of the bottled water, the manufacturers are not keen to inform the consumers of the contaminants that are present in their water. According to Warburton (1993), consumers are likely to drink bottled water containing contaminants such as E.coli, asbestos, giardia, bromate and many other industrial chemicals and pathogens. Stop Taking Clean Water for Granted Can you stop for a moment and think what would happen if we didn’t have water; clean water? It seems impossible, as we use water to drink, cook, clean, grow things, and for everything else in life. Unfortunately, because of the easy access to one of the most plentiful, and most valuable resources in the world, some people take water for granted. In contrast, other poor people live in places where the only easy way to get water is from a dirty irrigation ditch. Or their only source of water is backyard faucet shared by several homes.
We all drink water. Whether we like it cold, lukewarm, or in small amounts because it can taste so bland, we all drink it. Something that most of us do is buy and drink bottles of water because it is convenient for those of us who have a busy schedule. Most importantly, we buy it because from what we expect, it is the most safe option. Yet, what if it is not the safest option.
1. Introduction Water is crucial to our survival! Water is one of the scarcest commodities in the world at the moment; some argue that it is scarcer than oil. Wars have been fought over oil; therefore a war over water is a very big possibility in the years to come on this planet. With the current growth of the world’s population and the increase in demand for water in the agricultural industry, the issue of water scarcity is very likely to get worse and worse (Gupta, 2016).
A very good morning to my lecturer Madam Rokiah and my beloved friends. Today I would like to deliver a speech on ‘Water Pollution’. Life is dependent on water, and without water no form of life can survive. But it is hard to believe that even after knowing such a fundamental truth, how people can turn a blind eye to water pollution. Every year thousands and thousands of people, especially children, fall prey to water-borne diseases, and nearly half of them die.
Introduction By the year 2025, the Philippines is believed to be brought to a water crisis if no new sources of water are developed or found to meet the growing demand of the citizens. (Sapnu, R., Balabo, D., & Cervantes, D., 2007) "There is a Japan International Cooperation Agency study that says that if we will not conserve water, there may be some problems. But of course we can always start conserving now and look for other sources," Lopez (2013) said. Studies have shown how water conservation and appropriate water utilization are significant as early as today.
