The effects of unemployment on a person When I first started high school and piles of homework became a tough reality I longed to graduate. To be able to say farewell to the school and the pressure that follows with good grades at my disposal was my objective. What I failed to realise at the time was that I say farewell to a purpose as well as routine in my life as well. It did however come clear to me that this is the case when my brother graduated last year. The moment we throw our graduation hat into the sky we throw ourself into unemployment. My brother has now been unemployed for over a year and it is heavily starting to take its toll on him. It is found that long-term unemployed people have a tendency to spend two or less hours socialising with friends and family whereas employed people often spend more then two hours socialising with friends and family (Rosen 2014). On the contrary we can not eliminate the possibility that it is the lack of social ability that is the reason of the unemployment. A correlation between the two does however exist. To summarise, the psychological effect are widespread and will often end up in depression.
 Finally, finding out who you are, your identity, can be challenging without an employment. Often when you meet a new person the first question you ask is: ”What do you do for a living?” your occupation is a big part of your identity. If you however do not have an employment it is not uncommon to feel lost and as if you lack an identity. In addition, unemployment is particularly bitter for those who strongly identify themselves with a specific career path. They can not be who they want to be and therefore feel like they are not good enough. Finding an identity outside of an employment is however not impossible by any means (Dance, 2011).
