Culture is something that plays a part in all of our lives, it can be a strong influence on us or have non at all but it is present wether we like it or not. With that importance, we need to be able to understand what culture is. The dictionary definition is the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society, but to me culture is more of the fusion of people’s ideas. This doesn't have to cover a region. There is a global culture, everyone has their own family culture, and the combination of everything we are exposed is our personal cultures. I consider myself to be from many places but I connect with Egypt the strongest out of all the countries I'm linked to. Egyptian culture is quite similar to other cultures in the Middle East, yet has some unique aspects to it. Family also plays a major part in Egyptian culture with most if not all Egyptians a part of large connected families. Certain traits are often seem to define us. One such trait is laziness. Laziness has become synonymous with Egyptian culture. But, …show more content…
Look no further than where many of you are from or connected to you, the US. America is currently battling with a huge issue of racism with #Blacklivesmatter leading the cause for equality. A lot of issues facing African Americans in the US are caused by white cultural perspectives that African Americans are “more dangerous” or “thugs” and pose more of a threat than white people. This can be stopped if people attempt to remain neutral and open-minded when first interacting with something. People say that the influences cultural has on our perspective can help us make quick judgements and fast decisions, but these are often negative decisions. We see this in many cases of police shootings in the US with them firing because they see the African Americans as dangerous at first just like the shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager shot in cold
This is similar to what happened to Trayvon on the night that he was killed. African Americans know that a large number of them are involved in the criminal justice system. They also know that they are largely victims. A lot of violence in poor black communities are due to the
Did you know that White Americans have a higher chance to be frisked than to be shot? That is the opposite for African Americans. They have a higher chance of being shot before being frisked. But to push this farther, cops are trained on reaction. If you quickly put your hand in your pocket and you don’t do as told, police may think you have a dangerous item in your pocket, so you end up wounded or tazered.
Rebecca Griffin in “Why Don’t White People Believe People of Color About Racism?” discusses how racism is affecting today’s society. Griffin feels there is a lot of police violence toward the colored communities and also feels there is such a thing as white privilege. Griffin also includes in her article that whites cannot or will not believe that the African Americans are being victimized by the government and police because of systemic racism caused by some notion of white privilege. While many may agree with Griffin’s ideas, in the end, she is incorrect because we need to take a look into the bigger picture in this essay and realize it is not only just about one race that is experiencing these issues. The first issue with her article is that Griffin states
An example of how cops automatically make people of color threats and result into murdering them/using physical violence is the act of “stop and frisk” and getting pulled over for license and registration. When the person resists or even when you oblige, it leads to violence because you’re suddenly seen as a threat for “reaching for a weapon” and end up getting killed or hurt. These stops were reasons to target people of color to get searched and questioned without any probable cause until it became illegal (only to stop and frisk). Getting pulled over is still an issue today and every day that passes a black person becomes a statistic due to the culture of violence police have with firearms or the type of weapons that they overuse like tasers and pepper spray or even the excessive physical abuse/ force. “In court, Mr. Schmidt depicted Mr. Spear as a nasty and recalcitrant inmate who had started the physical dispute with Mr. Coll.”
Police are excessively violent toward blacks than any other race. Their first instinct when dealing with confrontation between a
Some officers kill African Americans just to resolve the situation quicker. Some of the killing are probably are under justifiable because of the training that police officer goes through. Their learn how to shoot a gun before learning how to deescalate the situation. For example, when in Miami garden police officer Eddo Trimino did not have to shoot Lavall Hall five times after threating him to “Get on the ground or you’re dead”. Lavall hall was a schizophrenic and bipolar and his mother told officers
In some of Americas society, the African Americans are viewing our police officers as terrible people or as racist. They see them playing favors towards the whites and just doing everything they can to target the blacks. They view at it from a child 's point of view. They are viewing it as the majority of people are out to get them. Police officers are going to arrest and do what they are compelled to do, regardless of color.
They may genuinely aim to to treat everyone the same. However, since the psychology of racism is deeply embedded within all our minds, police officers read people of colour as criminals without knowing they are. When looking at police brutality and race cases, it is often impossible to know the police officer had racial intentions for sure. Regardless, the actions they decided to take are borne out of racism. When these fatal shootings emerge in courts where white police officers are charged with shooting unarmed African Americans, these officers are often freed under the pressure of white supremacy.
Police are trained mainly on how to handle a situation physically, rather than verbally. If they feel threatened, they will take action. “They learn that every encounter, with an individual is a potential threat.” (Stoughton, S) Because they are trained this way, a racist officer can take this opportunity to kill any African American, because they feel “threatened”, even if they are unarmed. Police officers must be trained in a way to prevent any unnecessary deaths on African Americans.
A lot of African Americans are targeted by the police because of how they look; or simply because of the community they live in. Police officers have a type they go for and consider “suspicious” which are African Americans. Since the time that Africans were bought to America, they have been the victims of “racist” and discriminatory practices that have been spurred by those who create and enforce the law. Those who been targeted by the police experience many symptoms such as; increased vigilance and suspicion, increased sensivity to threat, increased psychological and physiological symptoms. The victims can feel the effects of this abuse for a lifetime.
Most of the time when the police fire their guns, it’s because the suspects have ran away. This proves that this is mostly about police hostility. Many people only notice the police shootings when a black man is killed because they look at it as a racial problem. The killings of black men stick out way more
Over the past couple of years, the instances of discrimination against people of color has increased exponentially. From Sandra Bland to Michael Brown, the injustices against people of color seems to have no bounds. As with any conflict, many people seem to be picking sides in these situations. Whether they side with the police or victim, it is hardly fair to do so without gaining an adequate understanding of what happened. Unfortunately, people fail to acknowledge both sides of the conflict in question.
Culture is the building block for life. It sets society's standards, it sets our own standards, and everything we know is all because of our culture. Culture is a way of thinking, a way of behaving and learning. We express our opinions based upon our beliefs, and define ourselves by what aspects of our culture we choose to show. Culture's impact on someone's perspective of others and the world is greater than its other influencers because it can change how you interact with people, your ability to change, and your opinions of the world.
This happened at night in St. Louis, Missouri. He heard commotion near his home and went outside with his issued police weapon to help. One of the officers did not recognize him and shot him in the arm; “friendly fire”. Another example is Michael Brown who was killed by a white officer in August 2014.
The most significant factor that influenced the development of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia was their geography, because their locations by large rivers led the civilizations to produce an abundance of food, leading to a population increase and for several cities to form which influenced the cultural, economic, and political influence of both civilizations.
