In the 21st century, environmental sustainability is one of the major issues in our modern society due to the negative impact of the greenhouse effect and global warming. The electric railway has the lowest carbon dioxide (CO2) emission compared with most of the transport modes like airplane, commercial car, bus...etc, which shows that electric railways provide substantial advantage to our society. Therefore, the development of electric railways is one of the key points in the sustainable development of the community. Also, the electric motor is the key elements in the railways. The performance of the motors affects the railway significantly. In this essay, I will first describe the brief history of the electric railway. Then I will explain…show more content…
Finally, I will discuss the future trend of the development of the electric motors. 2. History of Electric Railways The development of the electric railways has almost two-hundred years. In 1837, the first well known electric locomotive was invented by Robert Davidson. The design had been upgraded in 1841 and tested on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. However, the limited power limited its applications on that time. In fact, the early development of the electric railway system was driven by…show more content…
c. Low Noise Level The mitigation of the noise problem is also the advantage of the AC synchronous motor. In fact, induction motors usually have a cooling fan that produces large acoustic noise at high speed to control the temperature. However, the PM synchronous motor can reduce the speed of fan to decrease the noise level because of its high efficiency and less loss. These helps to reduce the noise level of PM synchronous motor.According to the data provided by Koichi Matsuoka, the measured noise level of the enclosed PM synchronous motor is around 10dB lower than the noise level of the self-ventilated induction motor. 6. Conclusion To conclude, the electric motor types of the electric railways have been changed several times due to the improvement of the technologies. The development of the electric motor contributes a great impact in the history of electric railway. It may also have a change in the future when advanced technologies are applied in the electric machine. I hope that the electric railway will become more economic and ecological reliable so that the environmental sustainability can be achieved and provides a better environment for our society in the
