Introduction
Evangelism is defined as “the spreading of the Christian gospel by public preaching or personal witness.” We see in Romans that it clearly says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17 ESV). 1 On top of other countless verses that state the importance of evangelism, its importance needs to be recognized and the evident call that we as Christians have is to go out and “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 10:28). 2 This needs to be integrated into our lives heavily. Evangelism is a gift given and a tool used by Christians that requires our obedience and attention. Where better to start looking at evangelism than through the lens of the Incarnation of Christ. The book of John paints this picture perfectly for us; “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14 ESV). 3 This verse is earlier described by telling us “The Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1 ESV). 4 Jesus came down in the flesh and lived a life among us - on our turf. That is the most powerful example of evangelism that I feel is in the Bible. And if we want to successfully replicate Jesus’ example of evangelism it is through incarnational action. We need to join non-Christians on their turf, wherever they are in life. By building relationships, and by intentionally devoting ourselves to loving them, we are taking incredible initial steps to evangelism. But, how do we successfully view examples from the Bible as forms of evangelism? We carefully look at Jesus, and see the ways that He reached His disciples. I went to an Evangelical church at the time. That was something that we supposedly believed in and practiced. Why had I never recognized this happening or being put into action? As I understood my faith a bit better I saw in the bible, especially through the third chapter of John, an incredible example of Evangelism being practiced the way that it was presented to me. John the Baptist was responsible to prepare the peoples hearts and minds and announce the coming of Christ. He went around rallying people up and speaking of Christ in such a humble way all to simply point people to Him as it says
