The Change in Sexism As Letty Cottin Pogrebin once said, “ When men are oppressed it’s a tragedy. When women are oppressed it’s simply tradition.” Many women have to deal with sexism in everyday basis; sexism is the prejudice or discrimination based on the sex of a person. Trough
Essentially, marriage in the 1700’s was seen merely as a means of birthing heirs and finding a way to financially support yourself, so it resulted in both men and women being devalued. It is universally known that women were often treated as inept and helpless rather than sophisticated people with autonomy and capabilities. In fact, during this time, “married women were consistently compared with minor children and the insane-- both categories of people considered incapable of caring for themselves. To marry a woman was, in one sense, to ‘adopt’ her-- or at least to adopt responsibility for all the circumstances of life with which she entered the marriage” (Teachman 39). Furthermore, when women got married, they would legally cease to exist.
3:6 – “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Thus, she regarded and dwelt upon the qualities of the tree. The tree was: 1. Good for food. Many, alas, have thought of their belly before the will of God.
Taking into account the behavior of Griffin and the expectations as recorded in the above contextual investigation it is reasoned that the rationale of Griffin 's activities plainly proposes his aim to have physical connection/favors. Inappropriate behavior is characterized as "unwelcome verbal or physical behavior of sexual nature that is serious or pervasive and influences working conditions or makes an antagonistic workplace. Inappropriate behavior incorporates different leads, for example, coercive assault, blackmailing sex for employment advantages, sexual or sentimental suggestions, sexual jokes, sexually suggestive pictures or toons, sexist remarks, disgusting dialect, hassling activities of non-sexual shape and even very much planned compliments. Thomas Griffin 's activities were scaring. His conduct towards Susan Pope was not conventional and here and there were odd.

The pressure to conform to societal norms is prominent in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. The idealized norm of Things Fall Apart is masculinity, while in Brave New World it one of promiscuity. Being Masculine, in Things Fall Apart means withholding emotions because they are seen as weak and feminine in the village of Umuofia. The 1920s were an era of exciting social reforms and deep cultural struggles. During this decade, time became progressive for women in America. Women were allowed to experience freedom on a more personal level. This didn’t hold back all the sexism that caused quite the controversy. Women from rural parts of the country started moving to the urban areas in search of jobs.

For some, this seems blatantly clear. However, others may need more convincing.

Socio-linguist Deborah Tannen demonstrates how men and women communicate differently in her essay “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other?” In her observations of communication styles, she discusses the way in which men and women communicate leads them to conflict because they have different understanding of their partners’ role. She also explains male and female communication differences not only cause ineffective conversation, but also push couples into a dilemma in their relationship; however, as men and women better understand the differences, their relationship improves. In the first part of her essay, Tannen discusses men and women do not have enough effective communication, which damages their marriage.
Generally, the person with whom someone enters into a relationship with is no one’s business but his or her own. However, depending on a couple’s ages, getting intimate with a partner may be considered a criminal offense in Pennsylvania. Being convicted of statutory sexual assault charge can have serious consequences with lasting effects. Recently, Fox 43 reported that a 19-year-old man was arrested on statutory rape charges in West Hempfield Township.
Comparison of Why I Want a Wife and Sex, Lies, and Conversation Since we are kids, there has been a battle between men and women. The conflict is also of misunderstanding reactions of each one to problems with authority, financial problems, communication, etc. Women blame men for not wanting the relationship to work, while men defend themselves, saying that women are too emotional. These happen because men and women look for different behavior from the other one.
Understanding gender and sexuality as socially constructed categories is important because it helps people understand a certain group. Gender and sexuality is expressed in many categories and people must be careful not to mix people in the wrong category. Simply because one expresses their sexuality different from another person does not mean they should be bashed or treated differently. Sometimes it does not matter what you identify as, who you identify with, people will always judge you, so its best people just do what they want. Putting gender in a category helps others not stereotype them as something they are not.
