Adolescents usually go hand in hand with self-destructive and risk-behaviours. Before the connection can be explained, two things need to be defined, adolescence and risk-behaviours. Many people think that dieting is only when a person wants to lose weight; this is only partly true as dieting has anything to do with food. Sometimes the need to lose some weight is good, but often the want to lose weight becomes obsessive. There are three main types of eating disorders that stem from extreme dieting. The first is Anorexia Nervosa, this is a psychiatric disorder characterised by an irrational fear of weight gain, self-starvation and a distorted body image. The person’s obsession with losing weight and limiting food intake becomes so bad that their health is compromised and they run the risk of dying. Secondly, Bulimia Nervosa, an emotional disorder characterised by distorted body image and an obsessive desire to lose weight. The person participates in binges, which are consuming of excessive amounts of food in one sitting, and the tries to rid them self of the food by fasting, excessive exercise, vomiting and/or laxatives. Lastly there is Binge eating, which is similar to Bulimia Nervosa, except the person does not try to rid them self of the food, they rather try to diet in a somewhat healthy way by trying to control their binges. This often results in failure and leads to even larger binges. This is one of the main causes of
Parents play the major role in a child’s life and impact their future. Forms of different abuse is a common leader for over eating or not eating at all. One feels as if they need to punish themselves for something they had no control over. Life throws many obstacles and changes over the many years. Having a mental desire constantly for food is something I could not fathom. It was shocking to find out about the similarities of those with drug addictions and the obese, because neither can help the urge. It’s a mental disorder in the sense because they cannot stop and its tragic. The most tragic was witnessing the people who had lost it all achieved their goals and becoming slim then regaining it all again. It brings me to wonder if science will create a breakthrough possibly one day that will resolve people’s addictions not just with food but drugs and whatever it may be.

It marks a transition in risks for depression and other common mental disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders and anti social behaviours. As they grow and develop young people are influenced by outside factors, such as their environment, culture, religion, school and the media.

We hope to eliminate or at least manage Ruth’s eating disorder symptoms through the combination of therapy, nutritional education, and medical treatment. Our main goals for Ruth Simon are to restore her to a healthy weight, reduce her behaviors and thoughts that contribute to the eating disorder and to treat any psychological problems related to the disorder. Since entering Saint Jude treatment center we have run a series of medical and laboratory tests on Ms. Simone.
