Tourism is defined by United Nations World Tourism Organization as activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes. Tourism has different types, one of this is Ecotourism. Ecotourism involves travelling to places to see different attractions like flora, fauna, natural and/or artificial landforms. Ecotourism also has different subtypes, one of this is Farm tourism. Farm tourism involve the activity of going to places like farms, ranches and experiencing farming related activities like learning the organic farming method. (Rubenstein.J.M. 2003. The Cultural Landscape: An introduction to Human Geography. 7th ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education, Inc. p. 469). Farm Tourism has been present in the Philippines since the 1990s, but was not institutionally defined then. In those early days, most tourist farms were either privately owned or managed.

Cynthia Villar is pushing for the passage of the Farm Tourism Development Act which will effectively institutionalize the government’s farm tourism programs in helping raise farmers’ incomes and increase players in the rural tourism industry.
Farm tourism mainstreamed in 2012 starting with the Costales Nature Farm in Laguna. The country now has more than 100 accredited establishments nationwide, majority of which are located in Luzon. It is under the umbrella of nature tourism that holds around 20 to 30 percent of the overall tourism market in the country. DOT Director for Tourism Regulation, Coordination and Resource Generation Rica Bueno said the Philippines has accredited 28 farm-tourism sites since 2012, earning it a spot as one of the top 8 farm-tourism destinations in the world at the Mother Nature Network’s web site.
