From the beginning of time men have usually had first preference. In the bible men were the first created, the first soldiers in the United States Army were men, even the first president was a man. Since then women have been successfully competing and completing the same jobs that have been male dominated for centuries. Women fought and refused to accept discrimination in their desired fields which forced officials to adjust. It is in society’s best interest to make allowance for women. It’s a social priority to make sure that we all can be treated equally. Although gender bias against women has been a problem in the past, today women enjoy the same rights and opportunities as men in many workplaces. In the earlier times of our society, men were the only people that could receive an education. Many Ivy League schools didn’t start accepting women until 1969. Certain jobs are based on what we as the people see in a person and determine if they are a quality supporter or a good representation of all of us. Presidency is based on the democratic process. Some women chose to make sacrifices for their personal lives such as starting a family. These sacrifices call for the women to take off time, sometimes exceeding the allotted time jobs give, which causes them to have a period of time that does not allow them to make money. There have also been rules and regulation that require people to be treated with a certain level of respect and allows them to take any job they want. Gender bias in the eyes of the law is non-existent. When individuals follow to laws that are put in place to avoid bias then it can be eradicated in that area. Once people begin the first few steps to equality, they will no longer question “What happens when they have equal pay?” Once women are paid fairly they could get better opportunities. The founding fathers believed that all men are created equal so why shouldn’t females have equality. Subsequently, people will treat you at the same level as men.
The only job that women were allowed to do was to help their husbands in their farms. But that all had changed when the United States went into wars and men had to go fight for the country. Women began to occupy a few jobs like working in munition factories or becoming the angels of mercy and working as nurses to relieve the soldiers’ pain. That was the starting point for women to begin demanding to work like men. Although occupied few jobs for very low pay, women were still not considered a part of the work force and they did not have any formal workplace rights and usually faced discrimination and unfair treatment from the other gender.
Women should request a twenty percent pay increase to even up the gender pay gap. In most jobs women earn eighty cents for every dollar a man earns for the exact same job. Employers should pay good, qualified women, who can competently perform their job duties, the same wages they pay men for the same work. Earning twenty percent less is a significant amount and it adds up over time. Throughout the years the pay gap has narrowed but it’s still not equal pay for equal work.
Equality among people justifies the development of human civilization. The history witnesses how people mistreated the others and how other people fought for freedom. It proves a permanent truth that the more civilized the people are, the less inequality would be promoted. However, there was no one period in the past, even now, without inequality completely. The slavery issue in the West and the gender inequality in the East both brought unimaginable damage for not only the groups of people who were mistreated, but also the society which is supposed to be peaceful, fair and justice.
We all know that women didn 't have as many rights as men, and they still don 't. Women can now do more than they used to, but they still aren 't equal with men. They have had to fight for so many things like the right to vote and to be equal to men. The 19th amendment, the one that gave women the right to vote, brought us a big step closer. The Equal Rights Movement also gave us the chance to have as many rights as men. Women have always stayed home, cleaned the house, and didn 't even get an education.

Small lies that we subconsciously tell ourselves mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, but if we tell ourselves small fibs on a regular bases over small and miniscule problems, what’s to stop us from saying bigger lies when bigger issues arise? One of the biggest issues, gender discrimination, must be abolished since women struggle with the gender pay gap, and unfair treatment in sports, while men struggle with the gender discrimination in divorce cases, mostimes leaving their gender as the main reason the mother receives custody over the child or children. Women may be able to participate in the same profession as men, but the large gap in pay between genders fails to attribute to the positives of said situation. The members of the Institute for Women 's Policy Research have used statistics over the past hundred years to conclude that: “Hispanic women will have to wait until 2233 and Black women will wait until 2124 for equal pay” (Pay Equity). The IWPR states that, “According to our research, if change continues at the same slow pace as it has done for the past fifty years, it will take 44 years—or until 2059—for women to finally reach pay parity.”
In our advanced 21st century, it is hard to imagine our society as anything short of perfect. After all, we have come a long way from our seafaring ancestors. However, the reality is that despite how we may sometimes avoid seeing it, our society is anything but perfect. A very prevalent issue today is that despite laws being set in place to enforce the equal treatment of men and women, women all over the world today still face poor treatment and discrimination. Because of how deep and long this problem has run, revising discriminatory laws may not abolish discrimination and legislating laws that endorse gender equality may not necessarily create equality.
What can be done to overcome prejudice towards Gender Equality? Gender equality entails protecting human rights, an economic necessity that allows women’s financial autonomy and national progress, and a country’s outlook on international relations. It affects childbirth rates, the quality of life and longevity of those children, and the type of life of the mother. The struggle is so vital to global stability and success that the United Nations (UN) addresses it in their sustainable development goals.
Gender Equality is the only way forward. What is gender equality? Gender equality is achieved when all genders enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all sectors of society, including economic participation and decision-making, and when the different behaviors, aspirations and needs of women and men are equally valued and favored.
