It’s 2017 and yet women still don’t get paid the same amount as men. The gender wage gap is a blatant act of sexism in which women get payed 80 cents to a man’s dollar. So why is it that work done by women is still valued less in modern day society? The answer when asked is women put in less hours in the office or the gender wage gap is just a myth. The gender pay gap is a very real thing happening in majority of the workforce.
Besides white women being paid less than men, more culturally diverse people are being paid even less than them. A USA today article on the gap says “The numbers were even worse for women of color, with black women earning 68% of what was paid to white men and Hispanic women’s pay amounting to just 62% of their white male peers, according to the IWPR.” click here for link. That is crazy considering segregation has ended, at least so we thought. Not only culturally diverse women, but all women are being paid less than men. As of 2015 women are only making between $0.76 and $0.80 for every dollar men are making.
Still, there exists wage disparity in our generation and will exist in the next generation if we tolerate this problem. Unfair payment is not adequate for any woman. Some people believe wage disparity still exists because most women have bad occupations. Those people mention that the wage disparity problem will be solved if women work in better occupations. However, wage disparity exists in both lowest-paid jobs and highest-paid jobs.
Hymowitz, a writer for the Manhattan Institute, attests that woman more often than not choose children over a career. Because of the fact that women have to take considerably higher time off than men for having children, and without the guarantee of paid maternity leave, women are often paid much less than men during these periods. This is not due to discrimination however, as employers simply do not have the money, or do not wish to pay the money for work an employee that can not work. These often long periods of time and the physical toll it takes for women to go through having children tends to make it harder for them to return to the work force and entices many to choose motherhood. The slavery issue in the West and the gender inequality in the East both brought unimaginable damage for not only the groups of people who were mistreated, but also the society which is supposed to be peaceful, fair and justice. In the modern century, for most countries around world it seemed that gender inequality is cruel and unreasonable, but countries in mid-Asia are exceptions. According to the report from The Global Gender Gap in 2015, Yemen and Pakistan ranked bottom of the list of gender gap which means the distances in economic and politic between men and women in those two areas was the furthest (International Rankings).
