Indian culture is incomplete without Gold Jewellery. Gold Jewellery is used in all of the festivals, function and rituals in Indian culture.The possession of gold gives a feeling of happiness and satisfaction to many consumers. Belk argues about the role of Materialism in goods consumption. Gold is also a premium commodity and its consumption can be seen as a result of need for possession for building Self identity.
The Value addition to gold means the difference in the output value and input value of the raw material. For Gold Jewellery it consists of five major phase: Raw Materials, Refining, Manufacturing, Retailing and Consumer Behaviour.

The predominant reason of handmade jewellery is because of diverse culture across India and cheap labour force. There are some famous designs that are based on particular regions as Jadau, Kundan, Meenakari, Navratna, Pachikam, Tribal, Stone based and Pure Gold Based Jewellery. The major output is from the fragmented unorganised sector but the value addition by this sector is low in comparison to the well organised sector which uses sophisticated machines,implement standards and purity checks with better efficiency. The organised sector mainly focuses on the consumption part of the demand while the unorganised sector caters to both the investment and consumption demand. Some refineries also make bars and coins to meet the investment demand. There are several clusters across nation which are known to manufacture a particular kind of jewellery. Kolkata is famous for its Lightweight plain gold jewellery, Jaipur for meenakari, amritsar for jadau,coimbatore for casting jewellery while Mumbai is the biggest place for machine made jewellery and Nellore for handmade
