There are many ways that one can take feasible steps at the grass root level to increase the quality of life for all people without increasing environmental degradation. The following are some of the ways in my viewpoint which can yield results.-
1. Reducing our dependence on private transport motor vehicles.
With the increase in per-capita income of people living in urban areas, the sale of cars has boomed at a vast scale. The loan schemes of banks have ensured that every middle class family becomes an owner of a car. As traffic originates from vehicles not the density. The increase in number of vehicles over the years has led to incessant traffic congestions leading to the degradation of environment to a great extent. Even from my personal experience, I can tell you that employees of my workplace at Panjab University use private cars to commute to and from work in spite of the fact that their homes are inside the University campus. It is an established fact that adequate walking, cycling and public transport networks can actually reduce the use of private vehicles in the city. Use of Alternate fuels and regular checking of pollution status of our owned vehicles.
Use of alternate fuels like CNG/LPG in your vehicles can help in reduction of air pollution. The strict implementation of these alternative fuels can help in to reduce fossil fuel emissions and the risks that accompany. Use of CNG and LPG fuels in heavy public transport vehicles can substantially lower emissions of petrol and diesel. Moreover, the biggest concern with cars and private owned vehicles is that their owners won’t maintain them and check their pollution status. The older the car gets, the more important it becomes to check its vehicle emission which can contribute to air pollution.
