Everyone eats vegetables but only few are curious about what it can do to their health. Everyone says vegetables are good to our health. I strongly agree on that. Of course, all vegetables are beneficial by nature. But there are a lot of things we should know about green vegetables. Beta-carotene is a pigment that gives color to plants. Here is some of its contribution to your health
1. It is considered an antioxidant and carotenoid. Hence, it is a wellness warrior that protects the body from free radicals – the damaging molecules. Therefore, it lowers the risk of heart diseases and cancer-type diseases.
2. It converts to vitamin A (retinol). Vitamin A supports eye, skin and cardiovascular health, lowers cholesterol, improves immune functions, good for mucous membranes and inhibits the growth of cancer.
3. It reduces sun sensitivity.
4. It maintains male fertility.

Since green vegetables are good source of beta-carotene, it will reduce sun sensitivity but it does not protect the body from sunburn. If you are getting beta-carotene in a form of supplements, the side effects you can get from it are bruising, joint pain, loose stool and skin discoloration. If you are pregnant or currently giving breastfeed to your baby, it is best to get beta-carotene from foods and not supplements. Though animal studies showed that beta-carotene is not toxic to your unborn or newborn baby, there is not enough supporting information to know what level is the safest. Also, if you are a smoker, controls your beta-carotene intake. High intake of beta-carotene may increase the risk of lung cancer.
2. If you are on your way to weight loss and you rely mainly in green vegetable juice, chances are you feel dizzy. So, add fruits and eat foods that are rich in protein and healthy fats. Solid healthy foods plus healthy juice have a lot to do with your weight
