Arsenic groundwater contamination is one of the form of groundwater pollution which is often guided due to the arsenic concentrations in the deeper levels. Groundwater is the major source of freshwater of the many parts in the world meeting the daily needs of domestic and agricultural purposes mainly. According to UNEP report(1999) about two thirds of the world’s population depend on groundwater only because of meeting their thirst as drinking. After the rapid industrial growth and the development in medicines the demand for water suddenly emerged out in a greater quantity. At the beginning of the twentieth century the rate of groundwater consumption marked a tremendous change from that of earlier decades. In different parts of the world arsenic …show more content…
Chronic arsenic poisoning results from contaminated drinking water consumption over a long period of time. According to WHO, permissible limit of arsenic in drinking water is 0.01mg/L. Approximately 20 major incidents of groundwater arsenic contamination have been reported of which major incidents occurred in Asia, Thailand, mainland China.
Arsenic crisis in India dates back from 1976 when a survey on arsenic in dugwells, handpumps, and spring water from Chhattisgarh, different villages from Punjab, Patiala, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh in northern India was reported.
Till 2006, there are 12 districts and 111 blocks in West Bengal reported as contaminated by arsenic. Here the mainly focus of the arsenic concentrations will be confined specifically in the districts of West

Hence it is required to study in detail the following aspects:
• The groundwater reservoir condition
• The mode of recharge-discharge relationship
• Groundwater movement characteristics with time and space
• Determination of the dissolved oxygen in a very effective and scientific way
• Oxidation-reduction processes analysed in a more detailed observation
Effects:
There are various effects found in consuming the arsenic contaminated water. Arsenic is regarded as the slow poison. Slowly it affects the lives who consume it for a long period of time. In West Bengal, Malda, Murshidabad, both 24 Paraganas, Hooghly, Howrah are largely affected by this arsenic contamination.
• Various types of skin manifestations
• Many arsenic toxicities includes kertosis, malenesia, hyper kertosis, dorsal kertosis, non-pitting edema, lung cancer, liver cancer, kidney failure etc.
• Different problems arise relating to nervous
Many parents and children had lead poisoning along with unexplained rashes and hair loss. Because
Toxicology Article Cases Cousins Herman and Paul Petrillo were career criminals from Philadelphia who decided to form a matrimonial agency during the 1930s. The purpose of their agency would be to help widowed women remarry and get life insurance policies for their new husbands. However, since the agency functioned as a conduit for collecting money from these policies, the Petrillo cousins and their gang had a vested interest in making sure their clients’ husbands came to tragic ends, often with the wives as willing accomplices. Paul considered himself to be a practitioner of witchcraft and intended to use black magic to cause the husbands’ deaths. When that didn’t work, they decided to use arsenic instead.
Radium destroys any cells it encounters and patients who took it for trivial problems began dying. Radium caused mutations that can turn into cancer, and at high doses it can burn the skin off a person's body. It also kills cancer
NAME: Zain Choudhary DATE: April 17, 2017 455: Response #4: Partnership and Ethical Challenges In the article “What Went Wrong in Flint” by Anna Maria, she talks about a major public health issue, where the tap drinking water was contaminated with high levels of lead all over the city affecting everyone in the area. She tells a story, where families noticed that throughout the months of drinking tap water, they have noticed many negative physical changes to their body. People started to have stomach problems, losing their hair and developing rashes throughout the city.
Drinking contaminated water can cause different types of cancers and also infertility and birth defects due to of the presence hazardous chemicals. Impoundments that have not been built or properly closed off have led to the death of many animals and also health issues in
In The Martian Chronicles, Bradbury warns specifically of human greed which causes environmental damage. In other words, humans strive to fulfill their own needs and wants, overlooking the environmental consequences to achieve this. Furthermore, this can be seen in the real world with pollution which is a by-product of cars, planes, factories, mines, and human waste. For example, in an article from Newsela which documents concerns of polluted mine water, they point out: “About 3 million gallons of water filled with cadmium, lead and arsenic poured into tiny Cement Creek and from there into the Animas River. Colorado and New Mexico officials cautioned people to stay out of the water” (“After Years of Holding Back” Newsela)
Residents started to report that they were experiencing rapid hair loss, chronic migraines and blurry vision. (congressional digest) - These are common side effects of lead poisoning that can be fatal if not treated in time. b. A funding plan is under go as we speak to tackle the current crisis at hand. - Republican proposal of $50 million and $500 in
Local businesses would be destroyed, if sulfide mining would be allowed in their region. Taxpayers would pay millions to clean up the waste from the sulfide mining. Water is always contaminated because of mining industries. There has never been a sulfide mine that hasn’t polluted nearby water resources. There never was a metallic sulfide mine that hasn’t polluted its watershed.
This pollutes the groundwater and puts the health of everyone that uses the groundwater into risk, as consuming too much
Then he added a solution that after a few hours would turn purple to indicate if poisoning truly happened. After the wait, both solutions were a deep purple, indicating lethal doses of arsenic, a common rat poison that in large doses can be lethal. These types of innovations are what give cities with a lot of crime hope to drop these
Water pollution has been one of the biggest ecological issues in the United States for many years. Although there are many efforts that are working to improve this ongoing problem, the situation still is the biggest ecological issue facing America. Indiana, one of the most polluted states, houses many heavily polluted rivers, including the Wabash River, White River, Eel River, Eagle Creek, and Patoka. The White River, the most polluted among Indiana’s rivers, runs through the center of Indianapolis. White River pollution is the greatest ecological problem in Indiana because of its detrimental effects on wildlife, drinking water, and the environment.
King River, Tasmania Outline the physical features of the King River. The river in Western Tasmania is made by two rivers, Eldon and South Eldon, coming together. It flows down for 52km to Lake Burbury where it goes through a tunnel to a power station. Along the sides of the river you can find huon pines - a type of plant native to Tasmania. The top part of the river lies in a glaciated valley and is surrounded by mountains.
Drinking water sources have been contaminated with explosive methane, as well as other dangerous substances, such as benzene and arsenic, that can cause cancer and other serious illnesses. Toxic chemicals, as well as erosion and runoff from drilling operations, have fouled
When coal and other minerals were extracted from underground, they emited several metal waste which was harmful for the water. It is evident that the Indutrial Revolution caused a lot of evnviromental problems for individuals. Without social protest it is doubtful politicians would have responded to the environmental crisis…in the late 1960’s and ealry 1970’s (Halbert, par. 1). Individuals were conserned about their health and congress decided to pass the Clean Water Act of 1972 to reduce water
In this essay, the discussion will point to Nile contamination as a controversial issue and highlight some health problems which occur as consequences of using polluted water in Egypt. Likewise, the essay will raise some scientific methods to determine the percentage of heavy metal in water supported by example. Then it will suggest some chemical technical solutions to reduce the percentage of heavy metals in Nile and reuse it again for many purposes.
