723 Words3 Pages

In the face of an inadequate fertility of soil and the inability to farm using conventional methods, which soil alternative proves to be the most efficient, the most water-wise and overall best for agriculture? I plan to investigate the alternative growing mediums using a single plant type, considering the aspects of each that may be beneficial in various outcomes which lead to earth’s soil becoming unusable. I will be using compost as the control, and then six different alternatives: vermiculite, perlite, coco peat, rockwool, Jiffy’s and a mixture of vermiculite and coco peat, and I will be growing radishes.

The water and sun used to grow the plants.
Dependent variables:
The growing rate of each plant, measured in millimetres at decided intervals of one week.
The size of each plant being grown, measured at the end of the project using measurement in millimetres.
Fixed variables:
The environment the plants will be exposed to; same amount of sun, humidity, etc.
The amount of water being given to each plant.
The amount of soil being used in order to grow each individual plant

Data Analysis:
Calculate the average growth between each two plants per medium, while leaving out the plants that did not germinate and produce a measurement, and present in a table of information.
Show the growth of the plants over the period of time they grew using a double line graph, though with multiple lines in order to accommodate the number of mediums used.
Record the number of plants that did not germinate.
When the plants are finished growing, remove each radish from the medium and rinse the remaining medium from the plants.
After patting dry and being careful not to allow the plant to dry out, place each radish on a scale to measure the weight.
Record the weights in a table and calculate the average between
