What is the difference between guilt and shame? It’s easy to confuse them. Guilt is a right or wrong about your behavior, and it motivates you to correct the wrong; however, shame is a feeling about yourself, and it makes people want to disappear and hide from the world. Shame is so painful to the psyche that most people will do their best to avoid it, even though it’s natural to human. Usually, shame is meant to be bad and embarrassed. People often think feeling shame destroys a person, and it’s a failure for a person. However, it’s not; shame can act as a motivation for people. Due to Duke University, report from WHO shows that government subsidies were not useful to persuade human habits, but social shame works better. Bangladesh used to have bad living conditions and worse habitats. Before, the government tried to talk to residents about their problem. However, they ignore everything. Consequently, the government decided to use “shame” to force residents to change their habitat. The government told citizens that whoever got caught doing restroom in public will be taunted by the community. The humiliation from the whole community is a huge hurt in psychological health. Due to shame, the residents did actually change their living habitat and less disease were in the community.
The Things They Carried tells a story about many soldiers that fight in Vietnam War. Shame as motivation was a theme in the story. Within the story, soldiers were force to fight. The only way they were willing to fight is because of shame. During that time, man who was fear about fighting will be look down; therefore, feeling shame. Moreover, fighting for their country is men’s responsibility in the 1900s. If a man didn’t fight for his country, he will also be look down by the society. Fear of shame was the motivation for soldier to fight in Vietnam
