Introduction:

Guns are part of the daily life of lots of Americans and Germans. Although there are major differences within the gun usage.
I got to this topic because of my exchange year in the USA 2013/2014. The differences in between the differences in the gun usage confronted me on the first day.
Having guns standing right next to the front door or not having them fully saved in the back of the car can be completely normal, while Germans are saving their guns to their best standard in a safe with a number lock.

During my exchange year, another exchange student from Germany got shot in Montana, USA because he went into a garage to get a beer. In the garage he got shot by the owner of the house, because he wanted to safe his family. He installed a sensor, because someone robbed his house a couple weeks before, to make his family feel safe. The man already had his loaded gun standing next to the door, so he only had to step out to pull the trigger. Because it was during night-time, there was dark in the garage, so he fired into the dark without seeing if he hit someone.
In Germany that would have never happened: I have never seen guns not saved in the house.

They are still in fear of not being able to protect their home. This fear is not is not understandable today, because national law enforcement agencies, like the Secret Service, the FBI or simply the local police, are established well and are always ready to protect the country to their best abilities.
