In the book Hatchet By Gary Paulsen, the Antagonist Brain Robeson, a 13-year-old finds himself alone in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash. Brain shows courage, resilience, and resourcefulness throughout his struggle to survive. With these abilities, Brain can strive living in the forest, and it is these abilities that make him a true hero. In this essay we will look at 3 reasons that make Brian a true hero.
One of the things that make a hero is their determination to overcome whatever they are facing. Brian Robeson shows his determination through his time in the wild. When the plane first crashed he was in shock, but he refused just to sit there and wait for help, in the book it says “ He would not stop. He would not let despair take over him”. Brain's Determination gives him motivation, through this, he learns basic survival skills. He makes a shelter, Finds and hunts food and even learns to make fire. His determination shows that he is a hero and does not give up, even when it gets tough.

Even though he is stranded in the wild where he knows nothing, He quickly adapts to the environment around him to survive. When brains plane first crashed, he did not know the basic things, Eg; Catch food or start a fire. However as Brian gets more experience, he learns his way around the forest, finding plants he can eat and hunting for food. His ability to adapt to new things and learn from his mistakes shows that he is a hero. A quote from the book “He would learn from his mistakes. He would
Brian had to be creative and make his own tools and weapons, I don’t think that I’d be able to do that. For example, on page 107 it says “He had to “invent” the bow and arrow - he almost laughed as he moved out of the water and put his shoes on.” I don’t think that I’d be able to make a bow and arrow like Brian did, I wouldn’t even know where to start. Brian used his bow and arrow to get a lot of the food that he ate, like foolbirds and fish. Not getting food at the same pace as Brian had would surely be detrimental to my
An important event in Hatchet was when Brian made a raft and went out to the plane to get the survival kit. Brain had seen the plane out at the lake after the tornado, and He wanted to go out there and see want was on the plane. He was thinking about it then he remembered that the survival kit was out there so he really wanted to go and get it, but something bad happened. When he got out there he was hitting the side of the plane (which was very easy), but he dropped his hatchet. But he got it, and opened the plane and had seen the dead pilot.
Chris McCandless was a courageous, noble tragic hero who should be admired. Some thought of him as a reckless, naive young man and wondered why McCandless received attentions. In the story, many of the people he met were inspired by Chris because of his curiosity. As a human being, he also made mistakes and didn’t learn from some of them, but he was somewhat not afraid to face his fears and experience new things unlike most of the people. McCandless is a tragic hero with flaws because he was independent, curious, and challenging.
Lastly, the novel gives the reader insight into the mind of a remarkable hero, conveying a huge sense of respect towards his
As stated by the author, “And then came hunger… and there was, he thought, absolutely nothing to eat,” (Paulsen 48). This quote reinforces the idea that the wilderness is very hard to live in. This is critical because this hunger leads rian to his first food, gut cherries, and eventually led him to catch his first meat, fish. This driving hunger led Brian to do great things, which leads us to the idea of how nature can be very unpredictable. Even when mother nature puts a tornado in the picture, Brian stays motivated to survive.
By coming-to-age, Brian pushes himself to the limits, taking a whole new perspective in life. All the way till the end of the book he made great sacrifices to achieve what he wants. Striving towards his sole goal. Surviving. This was the thought that circulated throughout his whole body.
Theme: Will Brain persevere through the wild? Or perish trying to live? His first experience persevering was having to crash land the plane, live or die. Once he survived the crash Brain has to find food, water, shelter, and endure animal attacks. Brain first food source were choke cherries but he got sick by eating eating a bunch.

The Hatchet is a intense survival story. The main character Brian is trapped in a forest after a bad plane crash. In the story, Brian used three survival strategies to lead him to staying alive in the forest and being able to face any challenges of survival. The strategies used are Trial and Error, Positive Thinking, and Observation. In the next paragraphs I will talk about the three main survival strategies Brian used to survive the forest.
In The Natural by Bernard Malamud, the central character, Roy Hobbs is a gifted baseball player. After a misfortunate event in his teens he resumes his baseball career in his late thirties. Through Hobbs, Malamud makes a statement about the tragic hero figure. Malamud comments that to be a hero involves two factors: failure and redemption. Throughout the novel the readers are presented with a narrative that focuses on Hobbs’ inability to reflect on his past failures and redeem himself in the present.
After the terrible crash in the Canadian wilderness, Brian's body goes through many changes in the novel but mainly, Brian’s mindset, his personality and his determination changes and he becomes full of tough hope. As unpredictable challenges come his way, Brian is at first very shocked and confused as his lifestyle changes in a blink of an eye. Brian has to live in a lifestyle that is very new to him, he learns that food does not come on a silver platter, one mistake can make a huge downfall, and that if he wants to get something done, whining is not the answer. Many challenges bring Brian down and he falls into a deep hole of sorrow, but Brian overcomes them as he becomes full of tough hope, strong determination and perseverance. It shows in the novel when Brian is full of tough hope is when the tornado crushed away all his hard work until it became a big pile of debris.
