Using the media spread cultural hegemony. In Korea, Some of the young people are not like traditional food by the other country's foods. Because in Korea, can taste all kinds of food at different restaurants. For example, Japan has good food cultures. So, Japan food cultures are dominating the Korean food. Representatively, Ramen is Japan's celebrated food, but Korea people really like it. So maybe Korean called that Ramen is Korea national food. Hegemony has an effect on the area. For example, Canada is close to the USA. that is why, between Canada and the USA, sharing of the each culture is easier than other countries. It seems like good, but Canada people are growing like USA people style. The USA has many cultures and that cultures circulated through the nearest neighbor. It makes that part of the culture are changed by the other culture style. If the effect of hegemony to other countries, many things will be changing of culture because hegemony can be dominated. Culture meaning is that what the country has personality and person's tendency. When dominating the other cultures, the country has many disadvantages or advantages. People can be interested in other countries easily. On the other hand, People do not know what is the own culture and traditions. In “The Day the Cisco Kid Shot John Wayne” by Nash Candelaria, it portrays examples on how hegemony is being used in this story. In the beginning of the story, we see that Junior’s father wants to move into town so that Junior can get better schooling and learn more English since “He’ll have to live in the English-speaking world.” (Candelaria 8). We see hegemony here because English is used throughout the whole country and knowing this language can mean intelligence and educated. Those who spoke another language other than English, was to be seen as not educated and not accepted by others.
During the very early 1900’s it had become very evident that America was a very strong world power. Events and changes around the world had changed the young nation and forced it to become more efficacious and active abroad. Events such as wars, uprising rebellions, interventions in other countries had transformed this once isolationist country into a super power. A major event that played a key role in the United States transition into a world power was the annexation of Hawaii. Another factor would be through the help of president Theodore Roosevelt and his “Big Stick” diplomacy.
Canada has a little piece of almost every culture in the world, shown through the large amount of people moving to Canada from every continent in the world. The multitude of cultures is displayed through the plethora of festivals held throughout the country every year, such as the Folk Fest, Edmonton Food Festival, Heritage Festival and the International Film Festival, all bringing in various cultures and traditions from around the world. Canada has all of these festivals due to the large amount of immigration that was even shown in Anita Rau Badami’s essay my Canada, when she and her husband had moved from India to Vancouver. Canada is one if not the most desirable countries to immigrate to, not only for the living conditions but because of the ability to keep your culture and not have to assimilate to a “Canadian” culture. Thanks to immigration Canada has become a great model country to look at for cultural diversity and cultural acceptance that any country can look at and try to model in their own
Hegemony, a seemingly simple word to describe unequal, human power dynamics. It is simple in indicating that a dominant class holds power over a subordinate class. However, some questions remain. What is the source which empowers the dominant class?
Imperialism In the 19th and 20th centuries, various powerful nations sent colonizers to dominate weaker nations and expand their influence. This domination is called imperialism, which is still practiced today in moderation. Among the many countries shaped by imperialism were India and China. These two large countries were both colonized by the British who were one of the greatest imperialistic powers at that time.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the United States began to grow into an empire. Within the United States, policies of both expansionism, the policy of territorial or economic expansion, and imperialism, the policy of placing a nation under the political, military, or economic control of another nation, were considered. The United States’ first large step toward an empire came with the Spanish American War, a war fought because the United States wanted to buy Cuba from Spain during the Cuban revolution. However, after the war, the United States did not gain Cuba.
Following the end of the Industrialist Era and the emergence of countless technological advancements, the United States entered the world stage. The United States was attempting to create an empire by expanding to land outside of its own borders in order to benefit the country’s economic interests. Many citizens, whose views were greatly influenced by their understandings of national identity, saw this overseas expansion in conflicting ways. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these groups differed in their opinions on the idea of expansion due to either their wanting to remain a democratic country built on the ideals of freedom and liberty to preserve their sense of national identity, or their wanting to expand for economic reasons and nationalism. Imperialism, which is the extension of a country’s power and influence through expansion, began as early as the 17th century, when Britain colonized the New World in order to expand economically and gain natural resources for manufacturing.
Before the 20th century the United States was an isolationist nation but around the late 19th century America decided to convert into an imperialist power. They had numerous reasons to shift into being an imperialist nation. America didn’t want to begin imperializing to settle and live in the nations they were taking over, they already had America for that reason, they wanted to adopt these nations for what they had to offer, which was many things. America saw an opportunity to improving their nation and took it. Even if there were many causes for America to imperialize, three of them stood out the most.
Countries subjected to American hegemony suffer economically. Through monopolization and the establishment of customs receivership and crony capitalism in a country, the U.S. renders them heavily dependent on America and its market. For instance, the U.S. maintains a strong grip on the economies of Caribbean nations by monopolizing primary industries. This eliminates all
The Strengths and Weaknesses of the United States Every country, in the world, has its own strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately, very few people are able to use them in a positive way. Unlike the United States, in Kazakhstan parents educate their children strengths and weaknesses when they grow up. American parents prefer educate them at an early age.
Imperialism means that one country controls all political, economic, or cultural life in another country or region. Europe successfully did this in the Americas and established colonies in South Asia, Africa, and China. Although this would seem like a substantial amount of power, Europe did not gain much influence until later on. Once Europe recognized their own growing control, they embarked on what is now called the “New Imperialism”. Many components played into this seemingly rapid success, but one significant reason was that of the
Culture allows humans to express themselves and gives them an opportunity to connect with others who share the same beliefs. In addition, a cultural object is an aspect of culture; it is an object or an idea and a valuable expression that embodies the beliefs of humans. Wendy Griswold describes a cultural object as a “socially meaningful expression that is audible, visible, or tangible or that can be articulated. It tells a story, and that story may be sung, told, set in stone, enacted, or painted on the body” (Griswold 12). A cultural object can be interpreted in many different ways.
The events in American history have also affected Canada from a political perspective, which lead to the Democracy that is present today. Another way the U.S. has affected Canada is from a military perspective because Americans are quick to jump to war and Canada has had to help control them which lead to them being peacekeepers. The United States helped mold the Canadian identity by being both a threat and support to the nation; this will continue into the 21st century but Canada will keep it’s unique identity. A country 's culture can be seen as interchangeable with identity; in Canada there is evidence of American culture everywhere.
Thomas McCormick’s essay titled The World-System, Hegemony, and Decline, presents some relevant questions that I am unable to answer by just reading his work. Firstly, alluding to economic freedom and freedom of the seas as main U.S. objectives with regards to foreign policy might not be entirely accurate. It is true that the United States have used and will continue to use its elements of national power to protect economic interests all around the world, but are these the only instances where the United States fight for other freedoms? Is Uncle Sam our capitalistic egomaniac above anything else? Additionally, McCormick seems to be disappointed when he writes about how labor compensation differs between core, semi periphery, and periphery countries (Merrill and Paterson, 2010, 4).
Japanese rule in Korea only lasted 35 years yet left an indelible legacy, and the country was relentlessly modernized with new roads, railroads, telegraph lines and new schools. This phenomenon can be called as industrialization that made Korea to develop. Furthermore, Japan raised the quality of education for Korean(THE JAPANESE). Therefore, Korean were being more educated than before thanks to Japan. However, these advantages were just a trick that Japan made.
