The food industry and in particular home cooking is no exception to change. Common trends with regard to the food industry reflect greatly on the changes seen with cooking at home. Examples of these trends include people choosing to dine out frequently as well as a shrinking number of individuals who find pleasure in cooking. Moreover, people are drawn to fast-food for the time-saving efficiency that it has to offer. These trends point towards the pressing need to find a way to make home cooking enjoyable because otherwise it would eventually lead to the disappearance of home cooking. Poon points out that the increase in obesity can be linked to the increase in frequency of dining at fast-food restaurants. This is further highlighted by Coveney et al wherein they mention that the increase in obesity, especially among children, is because of lack of home cooking practices (Coveney, et al, 2012, Page 10). Such trends are apparent to a large extent in Singapore where our healthy hawker food is not as healthy as perceived (Poon C H, 2010).This is primarily because of the excessive salt and oil found in hawker food such as sliced fish soup which alone contains 70 per cent of the recommended daily salt intake. Aircraft technician Johnny Lee, 37, who eats 20 meals a week said, “Hawkers do not seem to care much about serving healthy food”. Then again, Lee does not ask the hawkers to cut back on salt or oil, stating that it would be too troublesome, given that most hawker food is pre-prepared (Poon C H, 2010). Therefore, the limited availability of healthy and fresh food is a major problem that needs be addressed.
