What is “beauty”? How to define “beauty”? One of English language dictionaries, Cambridge English Dictionary, defines beauty, or being beautiful, as “the quality of being pleasing, especially to look at, or someone or something that gives great pleasure, especially when you look at it” . The other dictionary, Longman English Dictionary, gives a similar definition of beauty defining it as “a quality that people, places, or things have that makes them very attractive to look at” . Furthermore, beauty can also be defined as “the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, colour, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something …show more content…

No wonder that women learn from the early childhood that beauty means a lot and they are ready to do their best in order to achieve that unachievable criterion of beauty. I do not know what did “beautiful” mean to my sister and me. We never even tried to define “beautiful” or “beauty” but we wanted to be “beautiful”. When I think about that from this perspective, I understand that our viewpoints of beauty were probably different. Or they did not? So, what is beauty? Is there a unique description for beauty? Is there one example of beauty which everybody will characterize as beautiful? I am not sure but there is probably not. Beauty is not a stable category and we all know that it has changed a lot during the past. In 1950s a beautiful woman looked totally different from today’s perception of a beautiful woman. Maybe the most appropriate answer to a question would be that “Beauty is in the eye of a beholder”. I would definitely agree with this definition. We all differ from each other. Therefore, we all have different personalities and tastes. If I consider being blonde beautiful, my sister do not have to agree with me, and vice versa. I think we all have our own
