What is “beauty”? How to define “beauty”? One of English language dictionaries, Cambridge English Dictionary, defines beauty, or being beautiful, as “the quality of being pleasing, especially to look at, or someone or something that gives great pleasure, especially when you look at it” . The other dictionary, Longman English Dictionary, gives a similar definition of beauty defining it as “a quality that people, places, or things have that makes them very attractive to look at” . Furthermore, beauty can also be defined as “the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, colour, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something …show more content…
No wonder that women learn from the early childhood that beauty means a lot and they are ready to do their best in order to achieve that unachievable criterion of beauty. I do not know what did “beautiful” mean to my sister and me. We never even tried to define “beautiful” or “beauty” but we wanted to be “beautiful”. When I think about that from this perspective, I understand that our viewpoints of beauty were probably different. Or they did not? So, what is beauty? Is there a unique description for beauty? Is there one example of beauty which everybody will characterize as beautiful? I am not sure but there is probably not. Beauty is not a stable category and we all know that it has changed a lot during the past. In 1950s a beautiful woman looked totally different from today’s perception of a beautiful woman. Maybe the most appropriate answer to a question would be that “Beauty is in the eye of a beholder”. I would definitely agree with this definition. We all differ from each other. Therefore, we all have different personalities and tastes. If I consider being blonde beautiful, my sister do not have to agree with me, and vice versa. I think we all have our own
According to Susan, nowadays, people often view a woman as a mixture of both inside and outside beauty. However, people are still surprised by woman “who is beautiful is also intelligent, endowed, and good”. The idea of good looks as a central is derived from Christianity’s point of view. The word “beauty” is often represented as woman’s feminine side, just like “handsome” is often a demonstration of man’s masculine and good look. Even though, “beauty” could be used for everyone, but people be likely to refer to woman as a symbol of their feminine.
What is the definition of beauty? Webster’s dictionary says “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses”, but to some people true beauty comes in fire. Such is it with the society seen in Fahrenheit 451. As Shown during the course of the novel the differences of character, acts, and opinions between Montag and Captain Beatty burn brighter that the kerosene drenched houses at night.
Today, society has standards or expectations that are set, now people expect different things of girls and women. For example, people don’t care about your personality, it’s all about the looks. “She was an fair as this morning and fresh as tomorrow’s flowers and lovely as any maid when a man shuts up his eyes and traps her, in cameo perfection, on the shell of his eyelids.”(42). He’s saying she is the most perfect women he has seen.
Beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. Brutality is savage physical violence; great cruelty. The human race can be beautiful a brutal since it balances the complex character which humans are, we see this in The Book Thief with the characters and how war makes them react. Compassion is beautiful since the caring nature which human can bring comfort for those who are sad and conflicted.
I love that the reference of ideal beauty was mentioned. I think everyone in the world has their own ideal beauty. Whether that is in the present day, the past or I’m sure even the future. Specifically, back when this figure was carried in the pocket of a person for that specific time and a woman who was fat or had a big belly was thought to be a great thing since food was so scarce and it also was associated with fertility. That was their own type of ideal
In the book “Two or Three Things I Know for Sure” by Dorothy Allison the theme of beauty is brought to light in a way that is intersectional and develops the story to new heights. Beauty is discussed throughout the book and is one of the main themes. Allison talks about beauty when referencing her family and herself, and the idea of what it means to be beautiful in her mind based on how she grew up and where she came from. Normatively, beauty is associated with outward appearance and one’s identity, however beauty should be recognized as intersectional and include everyone, based not only on their outwards appearance but based on the beauty of their personality and thoughts because every human is beautiful in their own way. Dorothy Alison transforms
What do you think is beautiful? Our cognition of beauty depends on several factors. How we were raised being one of them. We find Stephen as a young man, really still a boy, working at the local pulp mill with his father and all the other men in town. Stephen, whose father seems to be of influence to him, is not sure what is beautiful.
The appropriate atmosphere is created also by the use of the words ”beauty”,
Prehistory Since this is a long time ago, not many is known about the beauty ideal of this era. The prehistoric beauty ideal
Thus, beauty, a concept that is assumed to be subjective, now morphs into something objective. Valenti notes that in popular culture, for instance, the most desirable woman is depicted as one
In some scripture like in Psalm 149:4 where the Bible says “For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation”. The word beauty here means to make perfect and to fix all the imperfections. So therefore by referring to the girls as “beautiful” it has the connotation of the word in the Bible which puts these girls in a perfect
In 1.6 of Enneads, On Beauty, by Plotinus discusses the common questions surrounding beauty. Such as, what is it? Why are we, as humans drawn to it? Why are some things thought to be beautiful while some are not? And, how do we know when we see beauty, or something ugly?
When one first meet her, one has to admit, first thing they notice is her looks. Right? “wow she have it all” or maybe the opposite. Beauty for women may be easier for them, like getting out of an officer giving them a ticket or walking into a restaurant without a reservation. Beautiful women could get more smiles, more handsome men, and better treatment sometimes.
Claudia recognizes that if we conform to the Western standard of beauty, we may gain beauty but only at the expense of others. However, Claudia learns to love Shirley Temple; Claudia “learned much later to worship her” (Morrison, page 16) This suggests that the idea of beauty is something that is learned and not natural or
In his documentary film “why beauty matters” English philosopher Roger Scruton introduces the idea of beauty is disappearing from our world. The philosopher implies, that Art has become ugly, as well as our physical surroundings, manners, language, and music. Nowadays, the main aim of art is to disturb and break moral taboos. It has now lost its initial duty and is used to show solely the ugliness of our world, instead of taking what is most painful in the human condition and redeeming it in the work of beauty. What according to Scruton is the main purpose of art.
