Our world today is, what some people would call, a digital society. This is defined as “a modern, progressive society that is formed as a result of the adoption and integration of information and communication technologies at home, work, education and recreation.” This is evident because many of our social interactions are based online, like dating, education, and other forms of communication and entertainment. This has caused our real life social skills to become stunted, since the majority of our online communications are non-verbal. Social media in particular can portray humanity in an unrealistic light, leading some to believe that maintaining friendships is easy; that they are disposable, and can be unfollowed and blocked. This is not the case outside of the internet however. So, to prevent this, we should limit social media use to keep us from permanently damaging our social skill proficiency. Social media also opens up opportunities for predatory behavior and cyberbullying, which can be dangerous to mental health, especially in teens, who are already dealing with wild hormones and emotions. With barely any consequences in place on social media for this kind of behavior, this can lead to unaccountability on the bully’s behalf.
