It is proven that a good supply of nutrients is of critical importance to a child of school going age. Children must receive an adequate amount of nutrients as it plays a critical role in a variety of body functions such as the promotion of growth and development, the building and repair of body tissue, improving resistance to illness and infection and supplying energy. It is therefore essential to be aware of the child’s nutrient and energy needs and making it a priority when planning a menu for school children. The main nutrients that must be included when planning a menu for children of school going age is as follows:

Carbohydrates are an energy source that yields 4 calories per gram and should be one of the child’s primary sources of energy. Therefore foods that contain complex and unprocessed carbohydrates are the ideal choices for children snacks. Carbohydrates that acts as an energy source can be found in fresh fruits and vegetables, vegetable juice as well as whole grains.
Fats also serves as an energy source because research shows that each gram of fat consumed supplies approximately 9 calories. The foods in which fats can be found are butter, margarine, cheese, oils and salad dressing.
The adequate intake of carbohydrates and fats will reduce the danger of mild protein deficiency as both carbohydrates and fats are and energy source to the body. Protein is an inefficient source of energy and is only burned for energy when there is not enough carbohydrates or fats available to meet energy
