2.3. Importance of learning and teaching vocabulary and academic word lists in EAP
Students who will follow an academic syllabus in English need to gain a wide range of academic skills like reading in a special scientific or academic field, writing academic thesis and discussing or presenting their own research. With its importance, academic vocabulary should be the very first thing taught by ESP teachers because this type of vocabulary, even though it is sometimes used in casual contexts, also has a higher frequency of occurrence in scientific and scholar texts.
Considering the difficulty of the task of vocabulary learning, it is an unreasonable expectation for the teacher to entirely teach all nuances of vocabulary and a whole set of a wordlist to learners. Instead, students can be encouraged to learn how to keep on collecting vocabulary on their own after developing a basic level of vocabulary. Mikio Brooks (2008) cites Gairns and Redman, who assert that “individual learning of vocabulary not only gives more responsibility toward a student’s own learning, but can also help focus on individual learner needs” (164). Word consciousness includes awareness of word structure, along with an understanding of word components and word order. Students need to become familiar with how written language differs from casual conversation by drawing their attention to the distinctive schemes of written language such as synthesis and complex sentence structures, constructions within sentences, how punctuation influences marking phrasing, and paragraph structure. Students experience benefits from hearing language that links the vocabulary and sentence structures in advanced written English. Though a large number of students may find reading and writing more or less to be an exchange of valued or non-valued information. Continuing on, multiple studies that have been conducted have also found that on average 77 percent of experienced readers tend to use content strategies to expand their knowledge of the reading. These strategies usually include vigorous annotations of the reading/writing that have been shown to improve the readers/writers’ comprehension of the material.

The Vocabulary Quilt strategy allows instructors to incorporate content vocabulary instruction at students’ English language proficiency. This strategy also allows students to work with others which promotes social-cultural development. The U-C-ME strategy allows instructors to uncover existing connections that students already have with content, concentrate on critical concepts, and monitor/evaluate the students understanding of a concept (Herrera, Perez, Kavimandan, & Wessels, 2013).
Writing is an essential part of an individual’s success. Writing comes in many forms, and it is not only used in an English course. It can be an email to a college professor, a resume, a lab report, a hotel review, etc. There are countless forms are writing, and it is important to understand how to approach each piece of writing. Writing is part of an individual’s daily life, and understanding the importance of rhetorical knowledge, genre knowledge, and audience awareness with make it easier to approach different types of writing, and ultimately improve one’s writing skills.
For me, literacy has always been a problem to this day I am still learning how to speak, and write using proper literacy. Literacy is not just reading and writing, anyone can do that but the ability to understand such things, to comprehend them that is, true literacy. My development for literacy has always been a struggle as I have spoken about before. I had a speak impediment when I was younger which used me to go into different classes which took me away from formal English classes.

Writing is not just about coming up with ideas and jotting them down on paper saying that it is your story because if it is then it is half done, and readers would not want to read what you have to say about how you feel on an experience that you have explored. Writing is about going through experiences and jotting those experiences down on paper and putting them in order so that the reader can understand what experiences you went through to get to the point that you have come to. Writing is a way to write you feel and to make it easy so that you do not have to speak what is on your mind.
