The importance of walking in an urban city like Hong Kong is undervalued as priority is given to the motorised transport, however, promotion of walking with reasons to walk would help to promote sustainable transport and increase public health. With land-use implication on transport, walking can be promoted through specific land-use as trip end and attracting people to walk so as to reduce automobile dependency. The smart growth strategy, which encouraging policies integrating transport and land-use decision, helps to create more accessible land-use patterns and promote sustainable transport so as to minimise pollution, enhance road safety, etc.
Since Hong Kong’s harbourfront has been an attractive place for both locals and visitors around the world, this is an opportunity to promote walking along this world class harbourfront area to achieve the objective of encouraging sustainable transport. The safe pedestrian environment allows youngsters to play and active to maintain their physical health and pedestrians are not necessary to worry about the motor vehicles.
