My personal position on individualism and collectivism leans both ways. In some ways both are necessary to have a balance society. Without collective views we would not have a democracy but a dictatorship or a classless society. Regardless of what people say no one wants to live in a society where they cannot strive for success. Taking both ideas separately, you can see the importance of both. Individualism, has stated above is about independence. To go a little further individualism is a way of promoting one's goals, desires, and wants without worrying about what others want. • Remember that you can't depend on the group for answers. As an individual you are expected to work on your own and use your initiative. • Prepare yourself for a business environment that may be less reliant on relationships and personal contacts. Business and personal life may very well be kept separate. • Employees or subordinates will expect the chance to work on projects or solve issues independently. Being too intrusive into their work may be interpreted negatively. • It is not uncommon for people to try and stand out from the rest. If there are no individual ideas how can we progress? One advocate of collectivism stated it: “Man has no rights except those which society permits him to enjoy. From the day of his birth until the day of his death society allows him to enjoy certain so-called rights and deprives him of others; not . . . because society desires especially to favor or oppress the individual, but because its own preservation, welfare, and happiness are the prime considerations.” How can anyone really embrace this idea that they have to rely on someone else for their happiest? This is in direct conflict of most psychologists teaching of happiest. Happiest is an individual pursuit no one else can provide you with true happiest. One of the main reasons why most marriages in today’s society don’t work is because people are looking for others to make them happy. People throughout history that have advocate have been dictators and have destroy a society of people. Examples of this is Nazi leader Adolf Hitler who is personal responsible for establishment of concentration camps to inter Jews and other groups he believed to be a threat to Aryan supremacy resulted in the death of more than 6 million people in the Holocaust.
