Landfills Landfills! Are they dangerous or do they benefit us? What are your thoughts? Do you throw away trash that can be recycled? Do you know where all of your trash goes? It all goes to a landfill. Where millions of trash bags live. Landfills are Meant to be safe, but can have some faults to them. Body The composition of a landfill is very important. The composition if a safety figure. If it weren’t for the composition the way it is there could be leakage. There is a simple way to keep from most leakage. First the bottom of a hole ,about a football field long, is filled with clay. The clay in the landfill is then layered with plastic. This plastic is 1/2 of an inch thick. This prevents the waste from leaking into the soil. This procedure protect the leakage out of the bottom. Landfills work like a bathtub, it can leak. In addition to the bottom of the landfill, the top is covered and sealed. “Above that, several feet of dirt fill is topped with soil and plants” says livescience (www.livescience.com) . After the waste is …show more content…
The sealment of the composition allows a lack of oxygen getting to the bacteria in the garbage. According to Livescience “Because of the lack of oxygen, bacteria in the waste produce methane gas.” (www.livescience.com) .This lack makes a methane gas. Methane gas is a toxic chemical that is harmful for the workers and the environment. In addition to the production of Methane gas, there are more reasons landfills are dangerous. The bottom layer helps prevent the leakage but doesn 't always work. According to IUN “In addition to common household chemicals, items such as mothballs, margarine, vinegar ethyl alcohol (booze), shoe polish, peppermint oil will all degrade HDPE and render it dangerous to the surrounding environment.” (IUN.edu). These leaks could run into waterways, agriculture, and many more. Although there are many dangers to landfills there are also severals
Currently, LA Compost is collecting material from 8 comminutes. The decompose is later distributed to local farmers in the community to use it for their new crops. https://lacompost.org/about/ ReFeed America: ReFeed Donation Ladder a Showcase of Food Recovery App Could not find more info online Eliminate
Where it decomposes and emits methane, which is a greenhouse gas. Around the world it creates 3.3 billion greenhouse gases annually. Nixon later starts discussing that there are about 60 million metric tons of food wasted in the United States. Also about how
Sometimes our waste overflows into the trenches and we have to live with it. This can lead to various conflcitions such as diseases and other
“Behind every great fortune is a crime.” The nature of the world we live in and the art industry are complex. Being an artist is a tough job. Well-known artists usually get a lot of media attention on any regular basis while some up-and-coming artists, get little or no such attention. Therefore, artist are always competing among themselves to come up with the best work to captivate people, stay on top, make a name for themselves and also a living allowance.
To recycle plastic one must use low temperatures. Since low temperatures are used residue is still left behind. If higher temperatures were used than toxins would be released. The truth is, plastic does not go away.
I am writing to express my concern regarding the visible amount of trash in our neighborhood. The surroundings of Dentonia Park and all the way to the Golf Club are filled with pieces of paper, cans, broken toys, packages and all the sort of unwanted objects on the grass, ruining the pleasant experience of walking in the park with the children. It is a duty of each citizen to preserve the city and it is not excusable to throw away garbage on the streets, however, a few measures could serve as friendly reminders of a person’s obligation. There is a lack of garbage bins in the park and on the sidewalks and this could be one of the reasons of why people are disrespecting the environment. If there is plenty of places to dispose the garbage properly,
The decomposition of NaHCO3 is an example of Prevention within Green Chemistry principles because all solid waste in this experiment is collected and used again. The only gaseous wastes generated by the reaction in the experiment are carbon dioxide and water, which are benign (Lab 3). The decomposition reaction of NaHCO3, generates virtually no waste, therefore less hazardous chemical syntheses. The byproducts of the reaction are gaseous CO2 and H2O which possess little or no toxicity to human health and the environment, because of the amounts released in this experiment. (Lab 3).
Imagine living in a world where the air is polluted and most people are afraid to step outside their front door, in the near future, this may be reality for Americans. Americans throw out over 200 million tons of garbage a year, yet recycle not nearly as much. Most people do not realize it but recycling is a vital part of America’s society and if Americans do not perform this action, it will backfire on them. People in America are debating whether Americans are recycling enough and correctly. After analyzing the data, one will definitely agree that Americans need to be more educated on recycling due to the fact that most people do not know what happens after they recycle an item, nearly all Americans are recycling incorrectly, and Am To begin,
In “The Hidden Life of Garbage,” Heather Rogers writes about the waste disposal in the United States and how dangerous is getting. Land dumping has been the main disposal method for many years because of the low cost. She writes how landfill is a designed construction in which the trash is far away from the environment. Therefore, isolation is accomplished with a bottom liner and a daily covering of soil. She also says that a sanitary landfill uses a clay liner to isolate the trash from the environment.
This number shows that people only account for 3% of the waste produced. This brings attention to how little of an affect each individual could have if they tried to recycle. Even more, is the waste of water as it is only 10% which is split between people and other municipals. This leaves the other 90% to be used by corporate businesses in the world. Now it comes
Imagine what happens if we keep on polluting our planet? What happens to our future generation? Since plastic takes years to biodegrade, if we keep polluting our environment with plastic, then our future generation will suffer from the environment around them. It also means that plastic and other trash will continue polluting the ocean, which can cause thousands of sea animals to go extinct, providing us with less source of food. Not only sea animals, but animals all over the world might extinct or become endangered because of pollution.
The process of food decaying and break down of sewage wastes, results in the release of carbon and methane. Also, fertilizers used for farming release nitrous
Recyclables being burned create air toxins that harm the natural
On the farm we recycle everything and try to stay away from using landfill as much as we can. All our silage covers and plastic is sent to a register collection point in Castlerea. All bags of meal are sent to Barna waste in Ballaghaderreen where they are recycled into plastic bags again. Plastic buckets and barrels are reused as either water trough or feed buckets for the animals whilst there are being housed. On the farm we take the environment very seriously and recognised that it is our responsibility to look after in the best way possible, we are looking at new ways to reduce our environment impact and carbon
Introduction People tend to consume a lot, when there is consumption, there is waste – and that waste becomes a big problem that needs taken care of, which costs a lot of time, space and resources. If not managed, in turn, the world that we live in will become a hazardous place for all living things. According to the World Bank, people throughout the world, “spend $2.3 trillion a year on food and beverages alone” (Global Consumption Database, 2018), that is quite a lot. In addition to that, the world count mentions that, “we throw out over 50 tons of household waste every second. A number that will double by 2030”
