Carbohydrates are the body’s main energy source. However, eating a diet rich in refined or processed carbohydrates like white bread, white rice and sugar doesn’t provide the best nutrition; these foods go through processing which removes vital nutrients like minerals and fiber. A low carb diet is limited in carbohydrates, such as starchy vegetables, grains and fruit, and is high on fat and dietary protein. There are many types of low carb diets, each with different restrictions on the amounts and types of carbohydrates one can eat. Examples of low carb foods in this diet include fat and protein, such as meat, fish, chicken, eggs and shellfish. At these times, growth is so rapid and one requires calories and various nutrients, like vitamin A, calcium and folate to enhance optimal development. Limiting calories and such nutrients could cause poor growth during critical years. Reduced carb diets may hinder breast milk production during lactation. They also lack fiber which could cause constipation, a common complaint during pregnancy. Lastly, a few individuals have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest after starting these diets. Health benefits of low carbohydrate diets There are plenty of potential benefits associated with reduced carb diets. Some of these have been studied intensely, and others have been frequently reported among those who have cut the intake of carbs in their diets. Of course, not everybody will enjoy all these benefits. Individuals who are ultra-sensitive to carbs are perhaps more likely to get more benefit.
