You can 't touch it, but it affects how you feel. You can 't see it, but it might be there when you look at yourself in the mirror. You can 't hear it, but it 's there when you talk about yourself or when you think about yourself. What is this important but mysterious thing? It 's your self-esteem.
What Is Self-Esteem?
It reflects a person 's overall emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self. How you feel about yourself and how much you enjoy things or worry about things. It is an opinion, not a fact but the way we view and feel about ourselves has a profound effect on our lives.

It can be due to destructive thoughts such as believing you are weak, unworthy of good things or not smart enough to be successful, hurtful thoughts that when you don’t feel worthy of love or respect you will begin to feel unworthy of success in any area of your life and unreasonable expectations such as feeling you should be able to cope up with a situation even though you have never had the opportunity to acquire the skills required, can further compound feelings of worthlessness or fear.
Rejection or loss is another important cause. It can be due to various reasons such as parents separating, boyfriend or girlfriend being unfaithful, being ostracized by friends, dealing with unsuccessful applications and coping with a death. Combining self-esteem too closely with academic achievement can create a great deal of pressure on an individual. Chapter two in the textbook Reflect & Relate an Introduction to Interpersonal Communication by Steven McCornack talks all about what “self” is and how to achieve complete fulfillment for one’s self which is also known as self-actualization. The components of self, as described in the book are, “ . . . self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem” (McCornack 39). Self-awareness is the idea in which one can take a moment to move feelings, beliefs, and other external influences aside and just evaluate oneself in a holistic perspective that is not skewed by opinions of others, etc. Having the ability to actually think about who one is brings a lot of power and mental stability in such a way that allows for improvement.
I had no faith in myself that my talent was something special. I did not think I was advanced enough to elongate my art career. In my sophomore year, I had an art teacher I was blessed to encounter. Theodore Roosevelt once said “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” Everyone will struggle at some point in their life and how they handle these struggles can either bring a positive or negative outcome. Peter Elbow’s essay “The Doubting Game and the Believing Game-An Analysis of the Intellectual Enterprise” describes the believing and doubting game and the effects they can have on a person. I have personally struggled academically in Advanced Placement physics.
There are a few links between an individual’s identity, self-esteem and self-image. An individual’s identity is them, their age, their name, ethnicity and background, their family, also their language and education. Their self-esteem means how much they actually value themselves and lastly their self-image is how they view themselves or see themselves. If they have no identity, for example if they are afraid of how others might see them this links to a low self-esteem which can lead to social isolation and/or they might suffer from depression, then their self-image may then suffer such as they forget to look after their personal appearance, hygiene and how they used to dress. On the other hand if they are happy and confidence with their identity then the individual is most likely to look after themselves and their personal image more such as the way they look, dress, eat healthily and exercise etc.
The issue at hand is childhood trauma but as mentioned before Depression will be focused on the most. Depression is often overlooked due to underestimation of effects to a person. Depression is caused by parental absence, anxiety, stress and substance abuse. Another large factor that causes depression is social isolation for example loneliness in university because of lack of acceptance from peers is a form of social isolation that leads to depression. Depression is an illness which can lead too many more problems such as mental illness, inability to cope with day to day aspects of human life, violence and aggression, alcohol and drug addiction as well as unemployment, and depending on the severity of the abuse sustained childhood trauma.
Psychological Effect: Self-confidence and Self-esteem According to Greenberg (2013), approximately 20% of the girls between the age of 8 and 18 who are using makeup say that they felt unappealing and undesirable without wearing makeup. And as a result of the survey she conducted, girls are wearing or using makeup in early age. They are also influenced by their celebrity idols, other people in TV shows and by the people in the environment they belonged. It says that women are more comfortable going out and socializing when they are wearing makeups.
