Class is a social system of hierarchy based on economic wealth. Joseph O. Jewell, author of Race, Social Reform, and the Making of a Middle Class: The American Missionary Association and Black Atlanta, 1870-1900, explains class as to “exist in large part as cultures-shared set of rules, ideologies, or
The lower-class is seen as the class that is struggling financially. They are the “blue collars” and “low wage workers” and people who work for other people. They are the social class with little to no college education. They are seen as the ones who rent properties and with little to no savings. They are seen as the social class that abuses of the welfare system.
In America after World War Two, citizens were split between classes based on their economic stability. Americans today still look at these classes and define these people as better off or worse off than the next person. Why do people judge others for having less money than them? Why do employers send lower class citizen away when they need the money the most? These are some question that citizens in the lower or middle class have when they are looking at their position in America’s economic system.
There is lower, middle, and upper class, but there are also subcategories that fill the gaps in between, like the impoverished and the top one percenters. “Class in America”, written by Gregory Mantsios, addresses the myths and realities about socioeconomic class in America and how they affect American lives. His article highlights the unequal divide that has persisted over the course of history and will continue to manifest in the future. To introduce the existence of this issue, Mantsios states that this country’s citizens “don’t like to talk about class...or class privileges, or class oppression, or the class nature of society” (Mantsios 378). This is the case in America today because people are neglecting to acknowledge the existence of these elusive
This middle class would have some of the luxuries of the upper class and would be way better off than the working class, but would still have to manage their money wisely. Some of these luxuries were authentic; however, many were just a cheaper version that was mass produced to look like it costs one hundred dollars, when in turn it only costs ten. These middle-class citizens would buy these things to make themselves look like the upper class, which wanted to be better than everyone else and have nicer things than everyone else. In this case, it was good that these things had a false side to them, but in other cases it can be good or bad depending on your side in things; like the
After watching the video “people like us”, I believe that class is made by large number of people with similar economic status or position. On the other hand, you can find people who try to fit in upper social class i.e. “Tammy’s Story”. Tammy lives with her four children’s in a trailer. She works as janitor in a local burger shop. Her job helps her pay the bills.
The middle class was an important group because they often held important jobs that society could not function without. For example, some of the middle class were doctors and lawyers. This group was similar to the aristocrats because they too had similar beliefs and ideas. They too also owned slaves, but only a few each and they were well off because they had decent income.
Elites’ taste were commonly adopted by people with lower income and status through the process of refinement which created the middle class. However, the middle class had to work in order to purchase all the material objects like tableware, china, carpets, and clocks. They earned extra income from household manufacturing. Thus, the middle class dealt with textiles and quilting to earn money and comfort. They were used to create family clothes or exchanged work with other people to create a strong fabric used to create summer working dressses.
The lower class works for their living and spends what money they have on things they need. Whereas the upper class, usually has a higher education and better paying jobs than the other classes in America. Thus, heritage plays a big part in reasons of social classes.
