“The Internet has made some phenomenal breakthroughs that are still only poorly understood in terms of changing people's ideas of us and them. If mass media, social isolation in the suburbs, alienating workplaces and long car commutes create a bunker mentality, the Internet does the opposite” -Alex Steffen Mass communication is the most extensively used method of distributing information in the 21st century. It is an extremely powerful instrument, which has the ability to shape numerous lives. Mass communication can also influence human development through its impact on various sectors, such as the scientific sector. Law enforcement today uses several forms of communication. Officers receive information from phone calls, and anonymous tips, and even footage taken off a smart phone in order to aid an ongoing investigation, which can lead to several breakthroughs regarding cases lacking sufficient evidence. Officers also use other forms of communication, such as Amber alerts, and all-points bulletins in order to update and alert certain people, whether it was common people, or other officers. An amber alert is a child abduction alert in which disseminates information about a missing person (usually a child), by media broadcasting or electronic roadway signs, or even as an alert on the user’s phone, while an all-points bulletin is a broadcast issued from one law enforcement agency to its personnel, or even to other law enforcement agencies. The use of several forms of communication together is beneficial because it allows Law enforcement officers to detect, prevent, and respond to acts of terrorism. As of December 2016, a total of 857 children had been successfully recovered through the Amber Alert system, and more than 1.4 million tips from anonymous tipsters have resulted in the apprehension of nearly 200,000 suspects and more than $1.4 billion recovered in property and narcotics since 1981.
