Media and Pop Culture are two huge fields in today’s world that are exponentially growing and broadening their fan bases, but maybe their fan bases are expanding a little too much. The other day, I was sitting in the living room of our house in the weekend when my 9 year old nephew walked up to me with his iPad and asked me if I heard this new song that everyone has been talking about, I hadn’t heard the song and I told him so, he then played the song for me and I was speechless, not because of how good the song is, not because I admire the vocals, but because I was shocked that it is popular, I was surprised that a music video like this is aired on television without any regard to the children that could be watching. As we were surfing the internet we came across a website called 9gag which shows all the popular memes now and we came across one that I felt was quite offensive to my culture and my religion and sadly, that is a common theme for memes to smear the reputation of religions, culture and praise stereotypes like they are a good thing. People, including children, now a days are very much obsessed with pop stars and media personnel, to the point that they start to mimic what those celebrities do, try to look like them and act …show more content…
They could use the huge influence they have on the people to do greater good, like show the people their role models doing good instead of highlighting and dwelling on the times they do bad, this could create a positive change in the world and influence people to focus on their education more and deal with greater issues in life rather than just what would
Celebrities can cause problems. Despite this, Collin Palmer, in his essay response to Deborah King, argues that being obsessed with celebrities can be a healthy escape from our boring lives. Collin Palmer says as much in his response to Deborah King’s article on celebrities. I agree with Collin Palmer’s response to Deborah King. Deborah King still believes being obsessed with celebrities is a bad habit.
They would challenge their students to become better and then teach them to contribute. The success of a school is measured in contributions. This type of work would be very different from
Music has had a huge impact on society over the years. From one culture to another, music has been used to represent our values and who we are as people. Despite the fact that individuals from all over the globe have a variety of musical preferences and select the genres and tones they prefer to listen to. This is a problem because all races should be able to put these elements together. Stereotypes have been around for many years and are still happening in today’s era.
When I was growing up, my father never allowed me to listen to a lot of rap music. Instead, he exposed me to other types of music, even music that was not in English. I found the topic of how music affects people to be interesting because I never truly understood why I was not allowed to listen to certain types of music. In “Media literacy and perceptions of identity among pre-adolescent African-American girls”, Johari Harris, Miles Irving, PhD and Ann C Kruger, PhD take interviews of 8 young girls attending an elementary school in a 6-week program called “Project Prevent”.
In a world like today’s, finding a positive role model to emulate can be very difficult. As the world becomes more connected, children have access to so much more information. They are able to keep up on the latest on all sorts of things, including celebrities. It is becoming more common for children to look up to celebrities rather than people in their own communities. Boys who dream of becoming a professional basketball player probably look up Lebron James or Kobe Bryant and girls who want to grow up to be a famous actress probably keep up to date with Angelina Jolie and all her upcoming movies.
Michael Omi argues that popular culture is shaping America’s attitude towards race and says, “Since popular culture deals with the symbolic realm of social life, the images which it creates, represents, and disseminates contribute to the overall racial climate.” (540). Popular culture shapes how society views people of other races through, music, movies, the media and in print ads. These stereotypical images that we see of other races on a daily basis have an enormous influence on racism. For example, if we were to turn on the radio and hear a rap song, most people would assume that the rapper is black, and when you think of a gardener the majority of people would assume that they are Hispanic.
Their actions were simple, but the results were profound. They wanted to see change, so they went out and made it. In doing so, they became an example to young people that age and experience don’t determine what kind of influence you have. All you need is the will to make change, and the perseverance to see it
Recently, there has been controversy over a certain topic. Are kids deluded narcissists, too coddled, and spoiled? Kids in this generation have awards handed to them like candy, believe that their online appearance is a true reflection of themselves, and are taught from an early age that “life is fair”. This is a problem because our generation is not learning how to deal with real life problems on their own, is relying on social media for their self-esteem, and is completely spoiled and ungrateful. First and foremost, kids are being coddled to the point where it could actually cause harm to their futures.
Since MTV has such a large hand in shaping the young minds of today, it is important that both parents and children are aware of the impact MTV has in their daily lives. In assessing the impact and effect of popular cultural forms like MTV, it is important to acknowledge the extent to which, rather than having them imposed upon us, we may instead appropriate or assimilate parts, whilst
Cultural Appropriation and Resulting Problems in Social Media and the Music Industry Recently, cultural appropriation has been a greatly discussed topic, especially in social media. The main reason for the popularity of the topic recently is because of the many celebrities accused of cultural appropriation, and the very few praised for appreciating rather than appropriating. Many argue that there is no such thing as cultural appropriation, and that the term is being misused for what is actually cultural appreciation. Additionally, many argue that cultures were all meant to blend as a learning experience.
“A high culture is the self-consciousness of a society”, Roger Scruton stated this in ‘The Guardian’ (1). Scruton goes on to state that, “It contains the works of art, literature, scholarship and philosophy that establish a shared frame of reference among educated people” (1). High culture drastically varies from Pop culture or ‘low culture’ as mentioned by Mr. Scruton. Pop culture would comprise of a culture which is generalized to the masses, highly entertaining to the young society and articles that are easy to understand. The latter is disputably more sophisticated, knowledgeably more challenging and intrinsically pleasing.
Celebrities with positive influence are not given the opportunity to spread their positive message to the world because the spotlight is mostly given to those who have no dreams and goals in life.
Imagine arriving home after a tiring day and all you wish to do is relax. After dropping your things off, you head to the kitchen for something to satisfy your hunger. Yum! There’s leftover pizza just waiting to be melted into a cheesy paradise, and what a better way to enjoy it then flopping down on the couch to watch television. Just as you take a crunchy warm bite of your pizza, a commercial comes on featuring Kim Kardashian, the embodiment of beauty.
In the contemporary living of the humankind in the 21st century, the popular culture plays a vital role in our own lives especially in youth. Hence, we future teachers and all adults must be more acquainted and involved in advancing our critical understanding to everything we read, watch and hear in all sorts of media than the youth to guide them properly in attaining more accurate and holistic knowledge inside or outside the classroom. As a student of Developments in education, I realized the advantage of how proper understanding Philippine cultures can contribute to effective teaching, because someday we will be in contact with Filipino children who will grow into adults of tomorrow. It will become essential for us, future teachers to have
