Menstrual fluid is just a harmless mixture of blood and tissue that was not used by your body to nourish a baby in the Womb.That the average time interval between the start of one cycle and the next should be 29.5 days, so closely matching the lunar month, is surprising. The continuation of these different ways of ancient thinking in the absence of scientific information in our current societies causes menstrual myths In Indian society menstruation blood is considered as impure. But many theories proved that menstruation is a healthy process. Lay theories suggest that having periods “cleans out your inside”(Martin 1987) and serves to purify. Women are not allowed to visit temples during their cycle but there are some temples worshiped to celebrate menstruation, one of them is Kamakhya temple in Assam. Ambubachi Mela in Kamakhya temple is celebration of menstruation of mother earth. There is a belief that a woman on her periods is impure and anything she touches becomes dirty, unholy, impure or unpalatable. However if you hold the pickle container during menstruation, what process could occur for it to get spoilt? It is just a myth. Maybe you can conduct an experiment and see for yourself. There are similar injunctions against watering plants – tulsi in particular, warning that it might wither. However, scientifically it is proven that pickle should not be consumed during mensuration as it produces heat in the body, which is not good for health. It got translated in taboo that ‘pickle should not be touched’. There is a myth that menstruating women should not take bath. This myth may have begun during the times when people used to take a bath in the open, for example, in natural water bodies such as lakes, rivers etc. You can imagine that it can be embarrassing to have a period while taking a bath in the open. But, now we generally take a bath or a shower in a private bathroom. Hence, there is no reason to follow this myth.
