In the United States, serving in the military is seen as a model of true patriotism, and rightfully so. Service members train for 10 weeks in their transition from civilian to a soldier. They train to be able to endure all the hardships that may come their way. Service members have to be in the best physical shape to serve and because of all that they do, they are thought of as brave and selfless people. In David Barno’s , “A New Moral Compact,” he stresses about our countries current military situation, which is all-volunteer. Barno has also served time in the military himself as a lieutenant general. He claims that the countries current dependence on the all-volunteer military, allows us to rush into war without thinking about the consequences first. Barno proposes the idea, “that every use of military force over 60 days would automatically trigger an annual draft lottery to call up 10,000 men and women” (p.20).This solution is useful but it is not useful enough because it targets sympathy from the people while he needs to target the president because the president can initiate a war without consent of the people or Congress.

From the beginning of the United States’ history, conflict has always been prevalent. The need for armed forces continually grows, especially in times of war, as the fight for freedom becomes more challenging. Conscription, better known as the draft, was first introduced during the Civil War as a way to get more individuals involved in the military to fill vacant positions. The practice of the draft was finally discontinued in favor of an all-volunteer military system, when the need for troops was no longer necessary. After almost two decades of being involved overseas, the demand for armed troops is imperative once again. In the essay “A New Moral Compact,” David W. Barno formally uses effective rhetorical techniques to successfully argue that a draft lottery system is essential for the United States’ involvement in armed foreign conflict to subside.

“Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state”, said Thomas Jefferson. Since the beginning of history, men have been drafted into the wars whether it be by force or simply choosing to fight for their country. Millions upon trillions of families have had their families cruelly torn apart from the loss of military men. There are multiple military forces in which you have to pledge to confirm your loyalty to our country to even be involved. Military forces today such as: marines, army, coast guard, and air force have men that choose to fight for our country, risking their lives everyday. There should not be a mandatory military draft due to fact that military deployment should be by choice, not everyone is physically or mentally stable enough to handle the military setting, and if men are forced to be within the military they will not be as dedicated or fight is hard for our country, so the purpose would be defeated.

Younger people shouldn’t be forced to serve in the military because it violates their liberties, enough people already volunteer, and mandatory draft should be preserved for time of war. Forcing people to enlist in a military draft is a violation of personal liberties that are supposedly guaranteed in America. There are many young people who think of joining the military as their dream already, so there is no need to make more enlist. Lastly, a draft should be preserved for during time of war. Some countries draft their youth whether their in war or not. I don’t think a mandatory draft is needed in America.

The short story by Steve Gillman was written on the bases of his personal beliefs on the praises military received from just by joining. He starts the essay with a short paragraph saying “It is about cultural mythology that has been created in the United States, which makes all soldiers into “heroes” (Gillman 679). The most important part of this quote was that by reading it the readers would understood that he was clearly against that all soldiers where no heroes. Gillman later supports the quote with some facts later in the essay.

While General Washington gets support from congress, the army needs it. Many soldiers lye sick and die, others have their dead or infected limbs severed. This is Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778. Valley Forge was 18 miles out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some soldiers are overconfident in the war and some are underconfident. My service time is almost over. I have concerns about my family especially my aging mother. Will you re-enlist for the army. I will re-enlist facing these facts, the army is running low on soldiers, Americans should have freedom from Britain, and the army is receiving support from congress.

Throughout history, countries are inevitably pulled into conflicts that result in war. These conflicts usually occur because of interests in: economic gain, territorial gain, religion, and nationalism. America, like every country, needs a military to defend itself, especially when tensions arise in other parts of the world and when militia numbers start to decrease. This then allows the government to draft its population to serve in the military. A big question in my life that I’m always being asked is, “What are you going to do when you grow up?”. I assume by “growing up” people are referring to high school graduation day. Well, when I grow up up, I want to join the military, and then go into law enforcement. The next questions I usually get, are “Which branch of the military do you want to join?” and “What law enforcement agency do you want to work for?” I’m still not sure which branch of military I want to join, but I do know which law enforcement agency I want to join; the U.S. Marshals!

A lot of people do not know the United States has called for mandatory military service before, just with a different name, the draft. The draft has been “employed by the federal government of the United States in four conflicts: the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam war. “This makes five different occasions when Americans were drafted for a total of 16.5 million people” ( Random Fact of The Day 1). 16.5 million people were drafted and under 1.25 million died in these wars, which is about a 7.6% death rate. While the military maybe a riskier job there are great benefits for it.
