For the ATP grant, I read many psychological articles about the effects of mobile phone use on well-being, interaction quality and relationship quality, and I truly believe that the most pressing issue facing society is mobile technology. Although I believe that iPhones and social media sites have a strong potential to be socially beneficial and healthy, it is very easy to fall victim to excessive technology use. I have always been intrigued by the way people use their mobile phones, specifically how people often ignore what is in front of them by scrolling through Twitter or responding to a text. Throughout my research, I discovered that cell phone use is correlated with many negative outcomes such as lower sleep quality, GPA, and subjective …show more content…
Furthermore, I know that a degree in social work, rather than clinical psychology, is right for me. I first realized this When Dr. Courtney Beard, the Assistant Director of Research at McLean Hospital’s BHP, interviewed me for the research assistant internship, she asked me about my future goals. I told her that I wanted to get a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in hopes of eventually becoming a therapist. She immediately asked me if I had ever thought about a degree in social work. I thought to myself ‘Why would I want to do social work? I want to be a psychologist.’ Dr. Beard promptly explained to me that with a degree in social work, I would be able to be a counselor. Furthermore, I would have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, prisons, counseling agencies, and schools. I would be exposed to a diverse range of clients, and I would work with colleagues who specialize in many different areas. Upon learning about the variety of options available to me, I knew that what I really wanted was to pursue social …show more content…
During my time as an undergraduate student, I have become more responsible, dedicated and independent. As a student researcher, my writing and critical thinking skills have improved greatly. Additionally, my internship at McLean Hospital has not only prepared me to work with clients in a professional setting, it has taught me the importance of clinical research and evidence based treatment. My involvement in research and the PAL program, as well as my internship experience has taught me how to balance my personal and professional life, so I know that I will be able to complete my course work, internship requirements and volunteer work required of me in this program. With hard work and dedication, I will be able to fully commit myself to reaching my academic potential. This program will prepare me to fully commit myself to helping others in a meaningful and effective
In response to recent studies that connect phone usage with the increase lack of face-to-face conversation, Sherry Turkle explains the risks of constantly being on a phone and solutions to the problems it presents in the New York Times article, Stop Googling. Let’s Talk. Turkle shares that the increase lack of empathy and conversational intimacy in humans has recently been attributed to the increasing use of cell phones. Turkle asks phone users to consider that using the phone even when alone can be damaging, for their time to “[listen] to [themselves]” are occupied by their devices. As a solution Turkle suggests that phone owners should limit their and their children’s cell phone use, by creating “device-free” spaces such as the car, the dinner table, etc., as well as taking advantage of built-in features such as “do not disturb”.
A little over two years ago, I started working as a Community Support Individual for Pathways Transition Programs LLC. My primary responsibility is to teach children various coping skills to manage their behavior, I have determined that I want to be able to address the emotions behind the behaviors. My desire is to be able to help the children I work with come to terms with their past histories so they can move on in their lives towards adoption and other positive outcomes. Sometimes, the children are still going through issues such as, on-going traumas, the lost of a parent due to death or incarceration, etc and I would like to develop the skill set to be able to address these issues. I see pursuing my degree through Argosy University as being the next step to take in order to develop a competency in counseling.
I have struggled to keep my school work a priority as I need to balance it with my part-time work and with the things I like to do to keep my life as normal as possible (like cheerleading and spending time with my friends). I am very honored and thankful to be the first the person in my family to attend college fall of 2016. As I strive to end my senior year positive, I always remember to tell my younger siblings to try as hard as they can in school, because “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I’ve decided that I would like to get my degree in social work, specifically working with children. Growing I’ve been around kids that are unhappy with thier home, but couldn’t do anything about it.
Growing up I felt shame for my Mexican heritage, teachers would tell me to speak in English and not in Spanish, specifically when I spoke in Spanish to my friends who had a difficult time speaking in English. Some of my Mexican classmates bullied me for being Chicano, Mexican heritage but American born. That motivated me to give it my all to learn how to read and write in Spanish and prove that I am not any lesser than they are and to prove that I understood my rights, after all, knowledge is power. As the years went by I realized that discrimination is not only confined to my education but instead followed me everywhere. Little by little I noticed people behaving in negative and threatening ways, most of all by people in positions of authority.
Journal #1: My Thoughts on Becoming a Mental Health Counselor The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the views of becoming a mental health counselor. Although there are many professions to choose from, I decided a mental health counselor with a specialized area in women’s health and domestic violence is my true calling. Tiffany Rush-Wilson Ph. D. stated, “That if we are in this field is because we have a true passion and the seed to do this type of work” (Laureate, 2012).
Why College Education is Important to Me By Kayte Forrester I made it a goal for myself to be the first in my family to attend college. After a really bad day at work as a CNA, I finally just signed up and said I’m going to do better for myself. Getting a college education is going to open a whole new world of opportunities for me.
Struggling previously in entering college, I have grown to be more focused and be confident in deciding a career. Learning about different theories and practice skills have enhanced my ability to work with clients. Currently I’m internship at AHRC Bronx TBI program have furthered my desire to want to gain more knowledge in the field. As an intern facilitating educational groups to traumatic brain injury individuals has been challenging while being rewarding. Observing the resilience of having a brain injury and the strength to continue after experience
This relationship motivates me to become an inspiration for others, because helping others heals your own wounds in the process. Making positive connections and conveying inspiration to others is what has led me to Seattle Pacific University. After finding solace through physical therapy myself, I hope to earn the credentials that will allow me help others find emotional and mental security through physical stability. Generating change catalyzes growth, so with a new college experience in mind I am looking to gain both personal knowledge and a holistic approach to inspiring and informing
Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. I am especially interested in working in child welfare along with terminally ill children. I have got to a stage in my career where I have started to search out instruction that will make me more efficient in creating plans and providing services for vulnerable people.
My passion for helping and supporting those whose economic and financial standings have hindered their growth in our society, has driven me towards social work. I feel I have exhausted every possible avenue in my current degree field. Pursuing a master’s in Social Work, will give me the diversity that I need, while aiding me in bringing my dreams of working more in depth with clients, by helping assist them with their individual needs and issues to reality. The Social work field also offers versatility which allows me to work in many dimensions, such as clinical, case management, and many other composites which enables me to help every population. Becoming a social worker gives me other benchmarks in which I can use to evaluate programs,
Have you ever been curious about social work? Specifically mental illness in social work? I have always been interested in working in some field that worked with mental illness. I’m very curious to see how others’ brain’s tick, and see what’s wrong or what’s going on. I had very many questions for anyone who would answer them about working with the mentally ill as a social worker.

Before, I took this course my only interest for my future career was for becoming an elementary school teacher, but throughout taking this course I realized that I am interested in becoming a social worker as well. Being exposed to the content in this course, if I were to become a social worker in the future I would be interested in working with troubled youth and incarcerated youth, to help put them on the right path and to make sure that they do not end up spending their lives constantly being trouble or spending their lives being locked up. I have always had an interest with people who are incarcerated and watching documentaries about jails/prisons, and working with children but lecture four ‘The professions of social work’ engaged my interests even more because during the lecture child protection and the criminal justice system were talked about, not in great detail but it still engaged my interests because during that moment I realized if I became a social worker I would want to work with troubled youth and incarcerated youth because I would be working with the child to ensure that they strive to have the best life possible for themselves. For academic purposes, one theory that I would be interested to learn more about in my academic future would be the psychodynamic theory, although I have learned about this theory in my other classes as well, I still find it one of
Why do you wish to study the program? With a social work degree, I would be able to achieve my dream of assisting people in need by using my life experience and the skills which I’m going to learn from school and placements. Moreover, I believe that taking this program will prepare me to assist families, anyone dealing with issues that affect their mental health and well-being. Another reason why I wish to study the social work program is that of the experience I had as a homeless youth.
We wouldn’t even think of going to bed without have our smartphone’s tucked under our pillows. The addiction to smartphone is impacting the social and family life and creating frictions in our lives. For example, these day people spend a great deal of time using smartphone such as playing game, texting message, listening to music, watching video and surfing internet. Therefore, people isolate themselves to focus on playing with their smartphone instead of sharing time to talk to others, especially at home, during break time at work or school and even if going out to get together with friends. It is easy to see that people’s social
