For the ATP grant, I read many psychological articles about the effects of mobile phone use on well-being, interaction quality and relationship quality, and I truly believe that the most pressing issue facing society is mobile technology. Although I believe that iPhones and social media sites have a strong potential to be socially beneficial and healthy, it is very easy to fall victim to excessive technology use. I have always been intrigued by the way people use their mobile phones, specifically how people often ignore what is in front of them by scrolling through Twitter or responding to a text. Furthermore, I know that a degree in social work, rather than clinical psychology, is right for me. I first realized this When Dr. Courtney Beard, the Assistant Director of Research at McLean Hospital’s BHP, interviewed me for the research assistant internship, she asked me about my future goals. I told her that I wanted to get a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in hopes of eventually becoming a therapist. She immediately asked me if I had ever thought about a degree in social work. I thought to myself ‘Why would I want to do social work? I want to be a psychologist.’ Dr. Beard promptly explained to me that with a degree in social work, I would be able to be a counselor. Furthermore, I would have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, prisons, counseling agencies, and schools. I would be exposed to a diverse range of clients, and I would work with colleagues who specialize in many different areas. During my time as an undergraduate student, I have become more responsible, dedicated and independent. As a student researcher, my writing and critical thinking skills have improved greatly. Additionally, my internship at McLean Hospital has not only prepared me to work with clients in a professional setting, it has taught me the importance of clinical research and evidence based treatment. My involvement in research and the PAL program, as well as my internship experience has taught me how to balance my personal and professional life, so I know that I will be able to complete my course work, internship requirements and volunteer work required of me in this program. With hard work and dedication, I will be able to fully commit myself to reaching my academic potential. This program will prepare me to fully commit myself to helping others in a meaningful and effective
