The journal article examines two concerns about the modern media usage by American youth. Firstly, the hours spend in the media by children and teenagers in the USA are increasing. Secondly, media usage leads to serious consequences such as early smoking, alcohol drinking and violent and aggressive behavior. The article is very informative for my research essay for several reasons. To begin with, it provides statistical evidences, the results of different researches. Secondly, it looks at the situation from different perspectives. Counter arguments presents almost in all sections. Moreover, the article describes separately the effect of movies, video games, cartoons, TV shows on smoking, alcohol usage and violent behavior which help to understand …show more content…
The problem has created strong concerns since the beginning of the 21st century because nowadays 99% of household in the USA own a television. Moreover, children and teenagers see perfect body images everywhere they go because of the increase number of billboards and the easier access to various kinds of the media. According to the article, girls and boys dream to look like people from the magazines and advertisement and in case they do not, the self-esteem of children and teenagers decreases.

According to the article, children and teenagers are exposed to over 200000 violent scenes in TV by the age of 18. It does not mean that every child and teen is going to grow up violent too. Much depends of the explanation of the true meaning of violence by the parents, the environment where child is growing up, the school where he or she studies and his or her friends. Surely there is a negative effect of violence in the media on the behavior of children and teenagers, but not everything is lost. If the actions are taken it time there is a chance to save children and teenagers from risky
In “Violent Media Is Good for Kids”, written by Gerard Jones, the author argues that violent entertainments have positive effects on children’s lives beyond their violence and juvenility. In his article, Jones uses a cause and result relationship between violent media and their importance to inform the positive impact of violent media. In addition to informing, Jones tries to persuade parents, teachers, psychologists, and others who are skeptical of the importance of violent media by giving evidence from his own life story and from his research. Furthermore, by informing and by persuading his readers, Jones encourages his readers to experience the significant part of violent entertainments. Even though Jones purpose is to convince about the
There are other ways that violence can be broadcast. Entertainment such as video games, music, videos, graphic novels and movies, all have an impact on the increasing violence in our generation. Video games can be played by everyone, especially adolescent from the age of 12-17. They can “play video games- on a computer, on consoles such as the Wii, PlayStation and Xbox, or on portable devices such as Gameboys, smartphones and tablets (APA).” Also from video games, music, videos, graphic novel and movies also contain sexual contents, alcoholism or drug addiction, guns, domestic violence, and etc.
In conclusion, media consumption plays a imperative role in the consumer consumption, especially in teenagers. Often we are bombarded with negative propaganda and negative messages that can lead to hating our self-image and lowering our self- confidence. It is alright and healthy to look like a woman, curves. It is not healthy to look emaciated and malnourished. Beauty is not about how many ribs you can see, or how bony your legs are.
Even though TV is quite violent today. We cannot blame youth violence on the media. One’s neighborhood is one of the most significant environments that influences kids. This is because kids learn how to live in this world by who and what is around them. If there is a lot of violence in the area.
Violent games can corrupt the minds of young men and women. There are many forms of media in our world today. It affects people in different ways. Although everyone doesn’t react the same way to media, many have negative reactions to it. Crime is heavily influenced by media in our
Do you think movies and TV shows influence teenagers? Nowadays, people spend time watching movies and TV shows more than setting all together having launch. People’s behavior including teenagers the most spend a lot of time on social media and this can change their behavior due to the things that they see. The media in general has a huge impact in our society on teenagers.
There are those who argue that it has long and short-term adverse impacts on the social lives on young children and adolescents while others declare that not all effects are detrimental. Therefore, the debate continues as more research is done on the issue. In spite of the many debates, there is sound evidence documenting the damaging effects of media violence on the society. It has been argued that, children who are exposed to violent media become aggressive and violent at some point in their life (Markey, Charlotte, and Juliana 293) Therefore, media violence has a severe effect on the lives of
Besides considering some benefits, some people believe that this telecommunication medium creates many problems to the kids. To attract the audiences, many movies and series have a tendency to contain more uncensored violent scenes. Numerous children spend too much time on watching television each day, and their parents cannot control what kind of TV shows or videos that their sons or daughters are watching. Research reveals that exposure to violent media can result in aggressive attitudes and violent behavior in some children (Dr. Gail Gross). This paper, with the aim of providing parents an overview
As television watching increased severely over the past half-century, it also became more violent. In 1969 the National Commission on the causes and prevention of violence indicated that ‘The preponderance of the available research evidence strongly suggests…that violence in television programs can and does have adverse effects upon audiences’ (cited in Berkowitz, 1993, p.199.) Since that time, television violence has increased largely. Research reports in 1970, published that children has seen over 11,000 murders on television by the age of 14. More recent researches and reports have demonstrated that now, the average child sees more than 100,000 violent crimes on television every year and about 200,000 crimes when they reach their teens.
As you know, violent media means TV show or game have violent acts in it. Nowadays, lots of children are recognized for having bad influence by violent media. Children may be more fearful of the world around them, or they more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others (“Violent Media and Aggressive Behavior in Children”). Violence media has appeared in a long time, and it has a great impact on children.
This is because the content of mass media is very powerful and it has become a agent of socialization which can shape people’s behavior or even influence the ways of how people think. There are many agents of socialization that can influence an individual lifestyle and one of the agent is mass media, which means that mass media can affect an individual self-concept, attitudes, or other orientations toward life especially the adolescents. The fact that there was a time when the internet, television and cell phones were considered a necessity but now the mass media seems to be more of a commodity to teenagers, because we can see that most of the adolescents tend to spend more time on the electronic devices rather than going for outdoor activities. Based on the researched, we found out that every people in the society
As a young child begins to mature, the different types of movies he or she may watch will affect how they behave. Violent films, are a prime example of this concept. Studies by George Gerbner, Ph.D., at the University of Pennsylvania, have proven that “children 's TV shows contain about 20 violent acts each hour” which supports the claim that these violent acts can correspond with how a child perceives the world (“Violence on Television” np). Psychological research also have shown that if a infant is exposed to violent movie, they may “...become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others, be more fearful of the world around them, and be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward each other”

“One may remember or forget these messages but briefly one takes them in, and for a moment they stimulate the imagination by way of either memory or expectation.” (Berger, 1977) as a result, teenagers are often depicted as lazy, rude, antisocial, violent, naïve, wild, irresponsible and mischief conductors by the society in real life because these particular images of youth have been constructed in their minds by the media. Films and TV shows that involves youths as the main characters, regularly promotes conformity. There are media effects that affect youths and the society based on the message and ideology sent in films and TV shows, this will be elaborated later on in my essay.
