Modern Warfare can be defined as using concepts, methods and military technology that has come into use during or after World War one and two. In Kathryn Bigelow’s award-winning films, both the Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty portrays the horrors of modern warfare.
In Kathryn Bigelow’s film about a decade-long man hunt for Osama Bin Laden, it begins with an unsparing, nauseating and frighteningly realistic look at how the CIA tortures many people and reaped very little intelligence. The first torture scene of Zero Dark Thirty features a bloodied, disorientated and humiliated man hung from the roof with his pants around his ankles. The cutting from scene to scene is used to create shock, a one moment Jennifer I speaking to someone on the phone, and moments later, the restaurant is in pieces and people are dying. As Maya and Jennifer exit the restaurant, close-ups and panning shows the deaths and suffering of many of the kitchen staff. Diegetic sounds are heard a people are screaming from the pain and horror. Close-ups of Maya’s face are used to show the shock and despair of the horrors of modern warfare.
In the final raid scene, Maya’s team raid Osama Bin Laden’s compound. The team moves cautiously through the building, close-ups of the team’s faces are used to create tension. The shaky camera heightens tension and create realism. The horrors of Modern Warfare are shown when the Maya’s team shoots their parents in front of their children. The screams, horror and tears of the woman and children are shown through medium close-ups. The camera zooms in on a small digital camera that the soldier is holding, taking a photo of the dead Osama Bin Laden, thus finally giving a face to the
