What is the most effective way to stop a world war? On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland (Timeline), going against the Treaty of Versailles but no one did anything. Every nation ignored the actions of Hitler, which in turn probably gave Hitler the message that he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it. As his actions become unbearable to ignore, the nations became angered and joined the war. In Tim O’Brien’s metafiction novel, The Things They Carried, he avoids sugarcoating the scenes that soldiers faced before, during, and after the war by describing the gore and violence in every detail. By including the scenes of violence, Tim O’Brien portrays the horrific effects of war on soldiers and the unnecessary casualties that the soldiers experience. Whether it be Rat Kiley murdering a baby water buffalo, Azar blowing up a puppy, or Lee Strunk begging his friend not to kill him after an explosion, O’Brien assures that the audience will have to confront the conflicts that these soldiers faced. The function of this point of view shot is for Devlin to acknowledge Alex and then be able to tell Alicia that Alex is coming. From here, Devlin gives Alicia her instructions on how to approach what is going to happen when Alex walks in. The 10th Shot is a medium close up, as Alex walks into the cellar after opening the door on the two. This shot is longer than all the others. The reasoning for the longer shot is to put emphasis on the fact that Alicia and Devlin has just been caught, not only kissing, but also in the wine-cellar, which will later lead Alex to become even more suspicious of the two and rethink Alicia’s motives.
