The role of religion among the youth has been hindered by modernism to a great degree. The unequal income distribution owing to modernism has led the youth to adapt inappropriate and wrong practices in order to earn money. The magnitude to which these practices are considered inappropriate is such that these are disregarded by all religions and are strictly forbidden. Increased consumerism as a result of modernism has given birth to unattainable levels of goals and a desire to reach high standards that in order to achieve these objectives an individual will adopt any job regardless of its nature. This approach contradicts the basic religious principles shared by Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and many other religions. According to a Quranic …show more content…
Owing to modernism, extremely inappropriate fashion styles and trends have emerged among the youth, which are absolutely unacceptable in religious terms. These fashion styles adapted by the youth do not comply with the religious teachings. Islam has set out specific conditions on how its followers should appear in front of other people and has clearly instructed its followers to cover their private parts and to dress in modest attire. Such guidance is given in Quran in Sura An-Nur, ayat 30-31 as:“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say that the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers...or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss”. Furthermore, Christianity also restricts inappropriate dressing attire of women. It does not allow women to wear indecent attire which would in …show more content…
It also mentions different procedures that have been followed and different ways that have incorporated modernism in Islam today. The article mentions “Countries such as Egypt, Turkey, Persia, Indonesia and India were influenced by Islamic modernist ideas. In Egypt, scholars such as al-Tahtawi (d. 1873) and Muhammad ‘Abduh (d. 1905) re-discovered the role of Islamic philosophical principles, and affirmed that revealed knowledge and individually-sought rational knowledge could co-exist. Thus, they sanctioned the study of Western science as acceptable to Islamic education”. Modernism has somewhere led towards promoting Islam and spreading its awareness among western science and different European
What makes certain clothing respectable? By the way they are sewn or by the people that wear them, people have deemed some clothing to be more “respectable” than others. At Seton Hall Prep, students are required to wear a blazer, button down shirt, tie, and pants with a belt. To quote the Seton Hall Preparatory School’s student handbook, “it is our belief that one’s external appearance will reflect and also encourage certain internal attitudes that are essential to a Seton Hall Prep student.” Their philosophy presents that one’s first impression of their student will be that they are neat and orderly.
In Document 1, a letter written in 1898, by an educator in India, Syed Ahmad Khan, tells of how Muslims are falling behind in education, the antiquated ideas of their forefathers do not survive their modern day and they must adapt British education. The Muslims were once the frontrunners of the world in medicine, technology, and education. He stated,”If the Muslims do not take to the system of education introduced by the British, they will not only remain a backward community, but will sink lower and lower until there will be no hope of recovering left to them.” The reluctance to adapt to British knowledge will ultimately be the demise of Islam. Similarly, 40 years later, Muslim literary figure and Egyptian nationalist, Taha Husayn, is all
Europe, between 1300-1700, made strides that linked the ideas of the past to those of the present. European intellectual life greatly transformed as people became more culturally aware - all areas of study flourished. The arts, humanities, literature, mathematics, and sciences made incredible developments, and these developments were rooted in Islamic knowledge. Beautiful paintings were crafted, awe-inspiring architecture was built, and life-changing books were written. These works were inspired by Muslim creations their community and for Allah.
Although George uses generalized ideas and doesn’t seem to have a strong voice on the topic of girls being dressed more sexually, her goal to raise awareness is effectively presented by constructing a common ground with the readers, and allowing the readers to critically think about the problem by providing contradictions. In the article, George begins by saying how provocative clothing is becoming more popular with little girls in schools, and how school officials have had to change the dress code due to
The book deals with the history of Islam and provides arguments over the liberal interpretation of the religion. The book puts the blame on the Western imperialism and the self-serving misinterpretations of Islamic law by the past scholars for the controversies which are taking place within Islam. The work by Reza Aslan challenges the clash of civilizations. The book
As shown in this paper, school dress codes affect girls negatively by restricting expression, diminishing confidence, and establishing platform for sexism in later years. In regards to restricting self expression, school dress codes take away girls’ differences, prevent personal opinions from being shared, and deny them their constitutional right of freedom of speech. In closing, on the point of diminishing confidence, school dress codes diminish girls’ confidence by putting them through embarrassment, body shaming them, and teaching them that their appearance is more important than their education. Lastly, in regards to establishing a platform for sexism in later years, school dress codes impact girls by teaching boys that women are objects, valuing the education of the male students over the girls, and targeting the girls more with these dress code
People born between the 1980s-2000 are known as Gen Y. They are “known” to be people who have become so self-absorbed, developed an addiction to not be themselves on social media, and to not care for anything else that does not involve them. Majority, if not all, of Gen Y’s is on social media and have shown a bigger interest in “self-love”. However, as the years go by, more of them have started to “do politics” in a different way. Many have adopted it as a hobby or many now view it as their “part-time” job.
With every new generation of teenagers or young adults, there always seems to be this negative look towards the youth culture. What really strikes me is that it happens with every new generation. It seems like once a person hits their teenage years they suddenly become “rebels” of society, and for what reason? How do most adults see the younger generation? They are young people who have bad manners, no respect for the elderly, they are real tyrants, they do not stand up when elders walk in, they do not listen to their parents or teachers, they talk in the presence of adults, and they eat gluttonously (Socrates).
However, those women believe that such kind of veils are a demonstration of women’s modesty and protection of modern societies’ assault. Nonetheless, it is the illustration of the respect to the Islam religion by the believers, as it is obviously indicated in the sacred Qur’an: “And say to the believing women: that they cast down their eyes and guard their private parts, and reveal not their adornment save such as is outward; and let them cast their veils over their bosoms, and not reveal their adornment save to their husbands” . Therefore, most of the Muslim women prefer to cover to accomplish their religious rules.
In Steve Chapman’s column, he questions why some women get to choose what they want to wear while others have to be told by the government what they can and can not wear. A number of towns along the French Riviera have banned the burkini a portmanteau of “bikini” and “burka” due to the deadly Bastille Day attacks in Nice. Government officials argued that the burkini symbolized the oppression or enslavement of women. Their reasoning is that to help Muslim women gain freedom as to what they wish to wear the government should dictate what they wear. Why is it that westernized women can wear skimpy revealing swimwear while Muslim women can not practice modesty because not all Muslim women are forced to cover up many of them chose to do so.
We dress for ourselves, not for a random guy on the streets, not to get attention from a stranger or to be yelled, chased after or get catcalled at. We dress the way we want to, because we like it. However a woman decides to dress, we should be treated with respect. Having a short skirt or a tiny shirt
Muslims put their full faith in God and rely on him to guide them the right way. This is shown in The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Santiago puts his full faith in God on the way to his personal legend and has no doubt that some things are signs from God. At the place in front of the pyramids where he is crying, he looks down and sees a scarab beetle. He knows that this is a sign from God and that he must begin digging.
2017 has been a year supporting female empowerment, expression, and confidence with your body. So why should girls feel ashamed of their bodies in the environment where they should feel the safest? The dress code should be less restrictive because, it’s unfairly targeted at females, it makes women feel less confident, and it restricts most athletic clothing made for girls. Schools continually enforce rules that they’ve had since they were founded. Times change, and rules need to too.
Modernism began in early 1700s with the rise of capitalism. This was start of an age of rational thinking. The major belief of this age was to believe only those things which they could see. The idea of modernism is, to quote father of Modern Philosophy Rene Descartes, ‘I think therefore I am’(2). This basically meant believing only those phenomenon those can be seen or proved by science.
Moreover, the parts of Islam and applications talk about Islamic daily applications such as woman, civilizations, freedom of thought and etc. In this modern era when people measure and see everything from scientific perspective and rely much on ratio, religion is considered as an antique lifestyle. It is also applicable on Islam that considered as religion done with its duty to reform the Arabs. In fact and my opinion, this understanding is totally wrong.
