My great grandpa was born when the Mexican Revolution initiated. He was one of many orphans at the time. It is said that he had lighter skin tone, like if he was European. Since he was not the only orphan out there maybe his skin tone was something that helped his odds for someone to take him in their family. It was pure luck just like the reading I did not do it alone pointed out, "being in the right place at the right time" can definitely change someone's possibilities ( Collins, Klinger and Lapham 9 ). They really didn't have any property because the Guererillos and the military will take over any goods or occupied any land for their own use. In addition to that, they will recruit any men to their army, therefore, my grandfather and his family had to hide in caves during the revolution. They had a total of 17 pregnancies. 5 were abortions because of lack of nutrients and the conditions they lived in. The 12 remanding kids were able to survive, however, 7 of those kids ages from 3 - 9 died because of diseases such as smallpox, measles, and typhoid. These disease could have probably been avoided with the right living conditions and resources like medicine. But, because they live during the war and had no such thing as an income they could not do much to save them. Also, at the time they did not approve of medicine and relied on medical herbs and rituals. Thus that effected the survival rate of the kids.
My grandpa was born 5 years after the war ended. He was the youngest kid and the only boy out the 4 girls that my great grandparents could save. He did not attend school because he had to help my great grandpa work on the crops or any way possible. They were discriminated for being foreigners since they went from village to village. Thus, they needed plates, mugs and pots for cooking. Therefore, the timing was on his favor because it was not that hard for him to sale his pieces. However, that was his job on the side. His main job was to work the land of the rich. At the time plantations were also in demand because it was the number one thing besides oil that the government needed in order to trade overseas. Therefore, the government need the people to work on the lands and those who were privileged got to own land after the war. My great grandpa was not privileged he had to work alongside many others. They were discriminated and mistreated for being poor. They were physically and mentally abused by the rich. But, they were also careful to not displeased them. Since it was a small village, the landowners basically owned everything. They had the resources that everyone in the village depended on including my great grandfather and grandpa. Everyone had to be careful to not get the landowners mad because they made sure that the workers would not be able to find another job or what is even worse they would take the wives of the peasants or daughters and rape them. This was motivation for my grandpa, he did not want to live a life of constant fear and abuse. So, he decided to take his chances and moved to the next town over to figure out new
