For instance, “In short, standardized testing and teaching are all too often in conflict”( Rapple, B., 2017, 197). This text shows that schools are fighting with each other to show who is best. Additionally, the example “Weaker pupils, those perceived as unlikely to pass, were also often neglected by teachers”( Rapple, B., 2017, 195). The weaker pupils were neglected because the teachers want to train the best students for the test, so their school gets a higher score vs the rest of the country. Lastly, the author states, “Many were left ignorant of how to apply arithmetic in day-to-day life”( Rapple, B., 2017, 195).

Students do not learn anything during the testing process. Most students already struggle finding time to do homework, and they have to study for standardized tests on top of their already busy lives. The time that students spend outside of class studying for standardized tests could be used for something more productive. The school also has to create a modified schedule so students can take the standardized test- it will most likely result in shorter class periods, cutting away from valuable learning time. During my junior year, the school made us do this online program called “Study Island” to help us prepare to take the HSPA. I hated it, especially because it tested me on math that I had not learned in my classes so I had to teach it to myself, but in order to get a good grade, we had to pass every module with an “advanced proficiency.” I failed each module at least 10 times and had to ask my teacher to reset my progress so I could try again. It seems silly now, but it made me so miserable and frustrated I would cry while doing the problems. This went on for weeks and by the end of it I had only learned enough to pass the test and nothing more. I could not even understand what I was doing.
I also did horrible in the tests, but I was able to push through that and I managed to pass the class with a B. My weakness this year was probably not having enough sleep. I get cranky when I don’t get enough sleep, and I realized I can’t focus when I’m in class. My strength this year was probably becoming more organized and setting a specific schedule for myself everyday. Since I have to work, I need to make specific time for my homework.
As said before, going with the flow is what I like to do and I think that being a versatile person fits right into that, which means being adaptable to many situations. Being independent comes with growing up and learning to be self reliant, as I continue to learn throughout my journey in High School. Having independence is a great assurance for me because I am in control of my life, no one else is making my big decisions, this life is mine and I control the destiny of it. My first impression of Tevis was how it was bigger than my old school. Junior high was not as difficult as I thought it was going to be, but on the other hand some of the classes were kind of difficult. The most difficult class I’ve had was Mrs. Buchholz history class in seventh grade. It was a challenge because she had us take long notes for tests and I really couldn’t keep up with her at first. Also, the test she had us take where hard if you didn’t study and she would give us about one class period to finish the
Going into highschool, usually students tend to have a difficult time still being close with their old friends and begin to drift away. In middle school I made friends and I stuck with them for the rest of middle school. Coming into high school my old friends were in a different building or attended a different class and I was scared of making new friends. After a while of getting used to the school I made friends with people who went to the same middle school as me which made it less scary. More often than not students fear the cafeteria and I as a freshman had that fear because it was filled with different grades from 9th to 12th graders.
I am also worried about finals week and just college tests in general, I know that the classes will be harder than they were in high school and I was never the best at taking tests and I get really bad anxiety when taking tests so that does really worry me. I was never really good at taking notes so I have had to learn to become a good note taker, so far it has been good. Studying for my college exams also worries me because I was never that good at studying and I am a
School is the place for learning and that is what we will do. If you take a huge general look your school there is a lot of different people who mesh into this community of people. That is so fascinating to me is seeing all of these people who are working together to get to the subject that they want. When you are going through school and even life you are going to meet a lot of people and they are going to impact your life in some way. If you are educated in the right way in high school you should be prepared for what is to come in college.

Many students have been found to become highly nervous and anxious taking these tests. As Ravitch (2013), “the exams looked like AP exams and were beyond the reach of many students”. These tests must be revised so that the majority of students can actually understand them. While some may be able to perform at this level not all will and believing that making something harder will improve ability is insane. Students must not be expected to do well on tests they don’t even understand.
I think standardized tests should be changed because standardized tests are unreliable, children and teachers spend a lot of time preparing for it, and standardized tests are causing stress in students and teachers. Firstly, tests are unreliable. “A 2001 study published by the Brookings Institution found that 50-80% of year-over-year test score improvements were temporary and "caused by fluctuations that had nothing to do with long-term changes in learning..." This shows that the information collected from the test can not really provide accurate information for teachers because of the inconsistent data. The data cannot show what students need to learn because of the fluctuations, making the standardized tests inaccurate and unreliable. This will only ruin the recent grades because the teachers do not know what to teach the students.
This aspect has resulted into a decrease of time spent in the recess. As a result, children’s’ emotional, social, and academic well-being is compromised in the long run (Ricci 351). Moreover, the fact that the federal funds are only availed to schools which meet specific thresholds, have put schools under pressure to ensure that their students can meet the requirements through standardized tests. As such, schools spend much time evaluating the students’ performance such that whenever “the students are not sitting for the standardized tests, then they are being prepared to sit for the tests” (Kohn 47). Another reason standardized tests aren 't a good way of teaching children is that they are stressful and pointless. Studies were done that show standardized tests cause sever anxiety and stress, even in the sharpest students. Researcher Gregory J. Cizek says that these tests cause gripping anxiety, causing younger students to vomit, cry, or both(7). Another example, NCLB standards are different in every state, meaning the comparison between states education is pointless. Evidence shows that in some states, students of the same grade level were shown to be answering mostly open-ended and essay questions, while in other states, students were answering mostly multiple-choice and short answer questions(120).More evidence shows that the multiple choice format some states are using for standardized tests are a useless assessment tool.
