Before I was born, my mother knew her baby girl would be a success story. Now that baby girl is a motivated young woman at the University of California, Berkeley, who will not allow anything to deter her from her goals. Education has always played a vital role in my family. My mom is a teacher and she has always taught me that knowledge should be treated as a gift. We were taught to value the power of education, simply because this is a privilege that many people do not experience. To further enhance my education, in 2014, I decided that UC Berkeley was the place for me and three brisk years later, I have become a Molecular and Cellular Biology major on the Medical Biology and Physiology track along with pursuing a minor in Education. This is incredible and I believe that by concentrating on physics and solely physics, I can excel and learn in a manner that is not offered at UC Berkeley. Physics is a required class I must take for my major as well as a Pre-Med course. I am currently on the pre-med track with the hopes of becoming a medical practitioner. Being a STEM major at times can be extremely overwhelming and often many STEM majors rarely have the opportunity to study abroad because of the course load but this study programs will allow me to do both. It has always been a dream of mine to experience the world and who would have thought that by studying abroad I will ultimately create space on my four-year calendar and it will allow me to take additional classes for my major and minor. And with both semesters of physics under my belt, this will ultimately create a less stressful senior year for me as well. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and presently still attending college in California. That being said, there is an enormous world out there and I want to allow myself the opportunity to actually learn the culture and practices of other people. This is a giant step for me and I believe that in order to achieve a more holistic education it is necessary to challenge myself by acquiring additional information about other people’s culture and background. I know that the university of Sussex will be a great for me because during the summer they have an incredible international study abroad program over the summer which means that people from all over the world attend this University to study. This is awesome because I will be able to make connections to people all over the globe. I hope that by attending the University of Sussex, my interactive skills will develop and that I will become more culturally sensitive while challenging my Americanized way of viewing the world. This is extremely important because in the medical field human interaction is inevitable and I would like to have as much experience with communicating with others from alternative backgrounds as possible.
