A disaster is an unexpected occurrence, or an event caused by humans or nature that causes loss, destruction of lives, disrupts how a community functions, destabilizes a community or country’s economy, and degrades the environment in a way that the community cannot adequately cope with the effects. The Nagasaki bombing was a powerful explosion whose power was equivalent to 21,000 tons of TNT. The energy produced by one kilogram of a nucleus of 25 is 20,000 tons of TNT. As a neutron undergoes fission, its energy doubles and they continue to gain more energy as they disintegrate. That is how the Nagasaki bomb functioned. This explosion was a disaster because it convulsed the entire city of Nagasaki through carbonizing both human and animal flesh and causing deaths instantly. The fire produced by the bomb was hot such that the internal organs of humans and animals vaporized. However, the bombing might in some sense be termed not as a disaster. This essay aims at arguing that the Nagasaki bombing was a disaster for the reason that its effects follow all the criteria outlined in the definition of a disaster. The Hiroshima bombing had taken place three days prior to the Nagasaki bombing, and the U.S. dropped leaflets warning the residents of Nagasaki to vacate because they would be attacked the same way Hiroshima was attacked. The U.S. used a plane to drop the leaflets and there was enough time to escape because this was done in the night and the attack took place at eleven in the morning.
