The Supreme Court announced on 30th November 2016 that all cinema halls across the country should compulsorily play the national anthem before the screening of films and that everyone present at the hall must stand up in respect till the national anthem ended. Meanwhile, the national flag should be displayed on the screen while the national anthem is being played. National anthem is regarded as a sacred tune that instils the feeling of pride and patriotism in the minds of the country men. We all have experienced, when our sportsmen do us proud by winning us trophies, how triumphant and proud all countrymen feel and the sound and music of our anthem stirs up our emotions and we all feel proud of the nation, its achievements and proud of the …show more content…
No doubt national anthem evokes nationalism and patriotism. But let’s look at the occasions when the national anthem is played: It is played in international sporting events when teams represent countries. It is played in diplomatic events, when diplomats and officials represent the country. It is played on national days, when the country is celebrating the nation, such as independence or republic day. The Supreme Court’s ruling to play national anthem in cinema halls before playing a movie has started a debate in the country. Some of the arguments by people opposed to the order are as follows: 1. Indians heading the most prestigious corporates around the globe etc. 2. DEGRADING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM: Of all places to instill patriotism, cinema halls are no place to get people to feel for their country. Imagine people associating national anthem with low grade/violent/poor movies. It’s always been a song that we associate with pride and patriotism. Playing it in such a manner at such places will be disgraceful to its status and tantamount to disrespect. This would only make national anthem lose its importance. 3.THE REAL FOCUS LOST: There have been several instances recently where people not standing up or paying respect have been beaten and abused by fellow movie watchers. Unfortunately some of these were disabled/ elderly not able to stand up or even foreign nationals. These instances create disorder and confusion rather than add to the dignity of the anthem. 4. DISREGARD TO INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS: The move is seen as disregard individual rights of having different notion or perception. Those individuals who support the order have their view point as follows: 1. SHOWING RESPECT: Standing up to your country’s national anthem is not to prove patriotism but to instil the feeling of love and respect for your
Although some people believe it is disrespectful to burn the flag, we as American have the right to protest in a non-violent manner. Whether someone believe burning the flag is alright or not, they still want to be treated equal despite their
A controversial topic currently circulating throughout the media and society, is professional athletes kneeling during the National Anthem. In my opinion, this is a completely useless, unnecessary action done just for attention. The theory behind the action is supposed to represent unity. Unity is not achieved by causing controversy, but it’s achieved by coming together and supporting each other when times get tough.
I believe that the owners of professional sports teams should not require their players to stand for the National Anthem, but rather that NFL players should be allowed to take a knee or unite arms because this medium of protest is safer than others. These protests are bound to happen either way because of the social forum integrated into the U.S. that encourages the diffusion of these certain mindsets. Recently, there was a protest in Saint Louis regarding the acquittal of Jason Stockley who shot unarmed Anthony Lamar Smith. In the protest, objects, including bricks and broken clay pots, were thrown and resulted in the injury of police officers. Both of these protests plead the same argument, yet the way they are protested lead to totally different
The National Anthem is something many Americans hold dear to their hearts. When football players started to kneel instead of stand with the others as a protest, Americans started to become angry. Football players should stand for the national anthem for the soldiers, to help unify America, and to find another way to protest. First of all, football players should stand for our soldiers. Our soldiers have fought for our country and they fight for our flag.
Although there are some people that still have that slave mentality and refuse to treat people of color with the same respect. Therefore, probable cause shows that refusing to stand for the National Anthem is appropriate and justified because of the First Amendment an individual will stand for what he feels is right or fall for
“... O say does that star spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Nearly every American can recite the final lines of our National Anthem. However, few take the time to truly contemplate the meaning of these words. When I hear these phrases, I think of the principles on which our country was founded: the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. But perhaps more important than these rights are the defenders of them: our veterans.
A lot of citizens want our country to have patriotic customs, they say that “We must restore our flag to its rightful place under the law so that our children and our grandchildren will never be confused about its meaning, its value, or the price paid to preserve it” (Wheeler). Most people agree that we should respect our flag, but this amendment is bigger than the flag, it is about upholding our First Amendment right even if that means disrespecting our sacred flag. Another argument that supports the amendment would be that people don’t think that flag burning is considered “speech” they argue that “what is said when the flag is burned?” (Brady). Although nothing is verbally said when burning a flag the message is “symbolic speech” and this can be backed up by Texas v Johnson (1989).
Kneeling during the national anthem is a form of peacefully protesting instead of choosing to stay silent and not have a voice. Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick who is currently a free agent brought the attention to “kneeling during the national anthem” when he decided to take a knee during a preseason game. Him kneeling brought an uproar of people who believed he was being “disrespectful” and “unpatriotic”, others believed he was being “brave” and a “hero”. Kaepernick had a reason for doing so, he was standing up for social justice and police brutality again African Americans. Significance of The Flag
The flag represents freedom and justice and those who are being oppressed feel as though these certain rights are being taken away and that is why it is okay for someone to kneel during the National Anthem. While many people believe that kneeling during the National Anthem is wrong and is disrespectful to the country’s ideals, what many Americans do not realize is that if they look past their beliefs and try
Everyone should show respect for our country wether they want to or not. Someone needs to stand up and do something about this. The National Football League thinks that it is alright to kneel during the National Anthem because they say there not disrespecting the veterans that proudly stand up to fight for our country they kneel because of Police officers treating blacks bad and to protest against the NFL’s owners and Mr. Trump. But kneeling during the National Anthem is rude and disrespectful because its meant to show respect for the people who fight for our country and who lost there lives for us to save
The United States is known for being a respectful and prideful country in the world. In the Pledge of Allegiance, it truly marks what it means to be independent. On July 4th, every year we recognize the Declaration of Independence that was signed in the year of 1776 for the ability to be ourselves. However, in the book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, she recognizes the importance of equality, meaning that every person is forced to act the same way and no one is above or below another person. They use the motto “we are one in all and all in one.
For instance, Eric Reid wrote in his article “Eric Reid: Why Colin Kaepernick and I Decided to Take a Knee” that he “remember[ed] thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy” (Reid). Clearly, the protesters were not intentionally attempting to be disrespectful and view their actions as respectful, however, that does not change how they are viewed by others. According to Quin Hillyer, they should not “denigrate the symbols of a nation of good people” (Hillyer). Although the protesters feel they are being respectful they need to realize that from the opposite point of view their actions appear quite disrespectful (Hillyer). In addition, Eric also states that “we . . .
This action caused an upset among students. Some students are in conflict on how to feel with the demonstration. People should not be disrespecting the flag for any
The National Anthem goes on every single time before a game begins. Each time it is being sung everyone usually stands up to show respect for America. While, news said that a few athletic players that have been sitting down, while the National Anthem goes on. This keeps happening more and more slowly because those athletics don’t believe that America lives up to that potential in the song as it once represented. As well as the incidents that happened with the police of excessive force being used against people unassertively.
Since September 11th, many more homes also display the American Flag. One might even see flags flying on cars or hanging over highway bridges. Parades also illustrate patriotism and pride in our beloved America since 9/11. Many of these activities show patriotism because it shows love for our country and a love for those that have been lost risking their lives to better ours.
