Nowadays, many countries in the world have a national service. National service, also known as Program Latihan Khidmat Negara, is a period of compulsory service in the military forces where a citizen is required to participate. The national service in Malaysia, which is a three-month program, was first introduced in December 2003. Teenagers who are 18 years old are chosen randomly through computerized process. There are many people who want the national service to be abolished. On the other hand, there are also many people who do not want the national service to be abolished in Malaysia. I personally firmly disagree that the national service should be abolished in Malaysia because it strengthens national unity and racial integration, instills the spirit of patriotism among the younger generation and helps to build character as well as leadership skills for the individual. Firstly, national service strengthens national unity and racial integration among the youth. Any country needs unity and integration among its people in order to live peacefully and obtain stability let alone Malaysia, which is a multi-racial and multi-religious country. Character building is solid foundation on which a person’s entire life is based. The activities included in the national service helps the individual to develop good characters like trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and discipline. As we know, the training is very hard and strict in discipline. Throughout the training, trainees are obliged to be punctual and manage their time properly.
