According to the Oxford English Dictionary, disaster is “anything ruinous or distressing that befalls; a sudden or great misfortune or mishap; a calamity”. It has been derived from the Latin word astrum or “star” which means literally ill-starred, suggesting some elements of luck and others magic and as well as powerful disturbances attributed to heavenly bodies. A Natural disaster or a calamity as how we call it has bring horror all throughout the existence of man and even early man has struggled to understand the cataclysmic forces that has destroyed his tribe and even his environment. National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) states that there are five active fault lines in the country, these are the Western Philippine Fault, the Eastern Philippine Fault; the South of Mindanao Fault, the Central Philippine Fault, and the most famous one the Marikina Valley Fault or the West Valley Fault. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) ‘big one’ earthquake might now strike anytime due to irregular movements of the west valley fault here in the Philippines. Muntinlupa is one of the biggest cities in Metropolitan Manila with a large number of populations and is unfortunately included in the West Valley Fault. Barangays, establishment, schools, residential area, river and creek have been identified standing and or is approximately near the fault line. Emergency response varies accordingly base on the structure and nature of the location. We have seen lives being sacrificed because of the limited power and number of the local response team. We are now facing a threat to thousands of lives with a major earthquake and everyone should take into consideration on how we can possibly maximize the number of saved lives.
