1.0. Research Background

Control of insects is something that mostly caught awareness of most people. Repellent is a way to prevent the insects from approaching but not to kill them. An insect repellent exists in various form of substances such as spray, cream, lotion, and powder. There are two types of repellent that is chemical and natural. Chemical insect repellent that is currently in use is containing substances that is toxic to human and pets. The precaution steps must be follow before using the insect repellent or else it would be harmful to health. Naturally- derived repellent is an alternative way to replace the chemical toxicity of chemical based repellent. The plant-based repellent is safer for children, pets, and food. Papaya, Patawali (Tinospora Crispa), and Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) are the local plant than can be found in Malaysia.
Papaya or it scientific name, Carica Papaya is originated from central and northern America then was distributed to Caribbean and South-East Asia during European exploration in the 16th century. In Malaysia, papaya is cultivated for the consumption of fresh fruit, as a drink, jams, and pickles. DEET (chemical name, N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide also listed as N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is the active ingredient in many insect repellent products (Patel, Gupta, & Oswal, 2012). The higher the concentrations of DEET in repellent generally it last longer and are more effective than those with low concentrations.
