The Positive, Negative, and Ugly Impact of Facebook on our Society

When Facebook came into existence, it was then a treat for all of us. No wonder most of us are overwhelmed about having a Facebook account. We want our friends on the network to know what we are up to, on an everyday basis. While young and excited adults want to update their FB friends about their adventure travel, proud parents want to brag about their children’s achievements in academics or other co-curricular activities. Or some people simply want to take a selfie in their exclusive designer wear and post it on FB, simply to flaunt. Although I personally love the concept of FB for its beautiful purpose, I would want to portray some of its ugly sides, which has caused a disruption to entire structure of the society. I will quote some real life examples, which I personally encountered.

Cyber bulling is, threatening or intimidating a person through messages, chats, and other means of cyber communications. Social media has offered more opportunities to the bullies. I would like to explain how this happens, with the help of an instance. A sexual predator, who very well knows that the sexual pray has her relatives and friends on FB, would threaten her of post of a controversial photos on social media, and the photos would be seen by all of her relatives and friends and can even go viral. A friend of mine happened to become a victim of cyber bullying. Her photo on social media, was being edited by him to make it obscene, by one of her college mates and then he showed the photo to her and threatened her that he would post it on Facebook, if she didn’t agree to spend a night with
